Sorry if this has already been posted here, but I didn't find it in a search.

This guy found that the Pre send back data that we might not want it to:

    Palm Pre privacy

    And the story:

Report: Your Palm Pre May be Spying on You - PC World

Report: Your Palm Pre May be Spying on You

    Jared Newman

    Aug 12, 2009 3:41 pm

Report: Your Palm Pre's Not So Private
    Illustration: Stuart Bradford
Is your Palm Pre spying on you and sending your GPS coordinates and more back to the Palm mothership on a daily basis? According to mobile application developer Joey Hess that's exactly what is happening. He asserts on his personal blog that data on the location and app used on the Palm's Pre smartphone is being sent to Palm.

    ....

OHHH NOOO! This is horrible. All our apps and usage info? Say it aint so.

Well, at least my 30 days return policy isnt up yet. I am certainly not happy with this scenario.

    Are you folks?

I could give two ****s... You think Palm, who as a company is relying on this phone for it's success or failure, would jeopardize the trust of their customers? I've been a Palm user for years, and haven't had a single problem (except for the Windows Mobile 800... yuck).

Palm, take my data, and use it to make the next update that much better! You think that your internet providors aren't collecting your data? You think that Google Chrome (or any browser for that matter) doesn't collect your ip address (location) or what you're searching? I'm pretty sure that google has a collection of me searching for the next best porn repository...

You're not happy? Then what are you going to do? Every phone in existence does this in one way or another.

Agreed. I figured this was a given... I don't even really understand why it was brought up.

Eh... I'm not happy with it, but at the same time, it's not that big a deal to me either.

Do you really think that the phone companies cannot currently pinpoint where you were when any particular phone call was made? Do you think they're not currently tracking your phone calls to and from your device? All you have to do is look at the bill detail for that last one.

Obviously you didn't the whole story... Not to belabor the point that you are all blatantly missing, but the MUCH greater concern is the manner in which palm is monitoring the apps (including third party... Got mytether?) that you installed and the times and amounts that you use these apps.

If that doesnlt seem unreasonably intrusive, you are just the type of sheeple that encourages even further privacy abuses.

Has everyone forgotten how the telecoms bent over for the bush administration and willingly participated in warrantless and ILLEGAL wiretapping?!? Do you want your app usage and info potentially conveyed to criminally acting government entities.

    Sheesh.

Thank you. Your the only sane person on this thread. And when palm accidentally looses the backup tape in the garbage bin, then people will be screaming about how Palm compromised their personal info. They will go to any extreme to rationalize their blind loyalty. Fandom is cool to a point but these posters are like zombies.

I don't like it at all. The problem is every cell phone manufacturer does this in one way or another and for every 1 person that cares there are 20 million that don't so there isn't anyway around this for us.

Sure, we could boycott them but what's that going to do? Then I'll never be able to have a cell phone and they'll never change since everyone else buys them anyway.

Look at it this way, GPS locations are already logged when you use your navigation software and / or when you switch towers. So that's nothing new to be worried about (they can already find my location). Then the app running time reveals NOTHING about you to them unless it's the case you're using the tethering app in which case Palm could, theoretically, forward that data to Sprint.

So I don't see this as a big deal compared to other things to worry about. The privacy implications are pretty trivial here. Now as to where and how Palm stored Palm Profile data... that's another story...

You don't like what they're doing, fine. Complain about it, b&moan about it, shoot, even do the "ultimate" complaint, and return the thing.

But just because others don't happen to share your opinion about the intrusiveness of the what the device is doing doesn't mean we're "sheeple". That type of attitude indicates rather than "sheep", someone's acting like a common name for a donkey...

OK, so tell me how a Treo Pro tells Palm anything about what is installed or where the device user is at? A Treo Pro does not even tell MS anything unless the user agrees to have data sent after an app crashes.

I knew excuses would be made for Palm the moment I read an article about this today: Palm Pre owners: Big Brother is watching : Boy Genius Report

And the Pre Central report mentions how Palm is committed to your privacy. Well they could respect your privacy by not collecting so much. They could also display a pop-up when data is being sent, to inform you of what they're collecting and give an option to deny sending it.

To prevent data collection could have been a simple option on the device for a user to select NO to, but noooooo we see experts like Hess having to use Linux hacks just to disable it.

On other devices, that sort of thing is only between Sprint and Telenav, because it's part of providing an aGPS navigation service and sending maps to the device. Palm has no need to know. There is now a new player collecting the data, Palm.

With the Treo Pro, users of Sprint Navigation are not sending their location to Palm or MS.

I wish I had my dictionary handy to insert an over-excessive amount of big words in this post. (Maybe I should go post an app-request...!?).

Fact of the matter is, just because I don't care that Palm is doing this, doesn't mean that I support it. I'm not a fanboy (or whatever the term is these days) of Palm. Yes, I like Palm's products, but that doesn't mean that I'm ok (or not ok) with them using my data to see how we are using the Pre...

Let's face it... the Pre is community driven, and I think they're just trying to see what we like, what we don't like, and how we're using the device. I don't think they are going to send this to the government to taddle on us for using our device improperly.

Palm has got to realize that we, us, everyone on this forum is it's lifeblood. Palm would be making a grave mistake to bite the hand that feeds them... and I think they are well aware of that.

    Sincerely,
    -Sheeple

I would like to have a few more people look into this matter to really flesh out what is and is not being done in regards to the pre.

Palm has stepped in it big time, and their only hope for retaining customers like me is to quickly provide an update which allows us to completely opt out of this "data collection".

    Palm, are you listening?

Incidentally, my first Palm was a Palm III, and I've purchased a total of four and a Handspring. Let me make it perfectly clear that I will return the Pre and cease to be a customer if this matter is not adequately resolved.
