Thanks for the link. I tried all the numbers, none of them came up...
A buddy of mine did some searching, he works for sprint...
He seemed to think these were all cricket wireless phone numbers, although I'm not entirely sure how he came up with that.

My Treo was stolen a little over a year ago. Like you I wanted my precious back. I had some info that I thought could lead to the thief. In the end, I got the best advice from TreoCentral and that was get the phone replaced and move on.

Sprint turned it off. Insurance replaced it. I did a police report which as far as I know led to nothing. Got a replacement phone, learned about remote wiping, and now carry it in a more secure manner.

Sorry for your loss. I feel your pain.

    Was that process pretty difficult?
Not at all. Took me about 20 minutes. In addition, I created a script that adds a very annoying screen announcing that the Pre "not in possession of its owner". I can activate that remotely, and it will "reactivate" itself as the default wallpaper every 60 seconds.

The instructions for the GPS reporting can be found here, and the "not in possession" mod is here.

As I said, no good after the fact, but might help you on the next one, and others on their current Pre.

I just used this method a few months ago for one of my lines, I located him with the Family Locater it came within 200 feet of the location, I used Google streetview and found that there happened to be an apartment within the radius. So I next looked at the numbers he called, I called the numbers and just phished for info about the person, I finally called one number and it was the kids Grandma of all people. The Grandma got very upset when I explained the situation, she was able to track him down and I was able to get my phone back. Trust me I made him pay for the usage that he used. It was priceless (especially when I told the grandma Ya I am tracking him with GPS and I know he lives in these apartments, and I don't really want to have to get the police involved)

Keep it up, I hope you catch him. If not it's a thrill of the chase.

This worked for me, have a chick, sorry woman, call your phone late on a Friday night. Have her tell the dude she met him on any street in that 700 yard radius on any day after your phone was stolen. Have her tell him that her and her girls are going to whatever club on Saturday night and to meet up. Go to the club (choose one you'd like to hang at as well in case the creep doesn't show) and have the girl call/text him in order to guide him to a spot in the club, making sure the last call/text is "I think i see you, I'm not sure, raise your hand" then pummel the looser.

In my case, I suspected an employee of a nightclub took my phone. As soon as he raised his hand i called the cops and got my phone back, he got fired and i had a great night out.

usually the police can subpoena the GPS coordinates of the phone, from sprint... and force them to fork it over..

however, it takes an awful lot to do that.. and an attorney. it might be worth it to cut it off, change the code on your garage door opener, call the bank - re issue your cards (and other things), and re key your house, change your security system code, etc.

Slightly (but only slightly) off-topic, but I'm glad you said this. Personally, I'm tired of a society that teaches everyone "Don't resist, give them what they want and maybe they won't hurt you". Slang/vulgar for ******* on that!! We're training thugs to take what they want, and we act surprised when they do! Personally, I long for (and hope we return to) a society where borderline hooligans err on the side of safety because they don't know what will happen if they try to steal, and no matter how mad someone is, they don't talk about your momma because they know they might get punched in the nose.

But then, I'm from Texas, we're not only allowed to carry guns, we're allowed to use them to protect our property.

you could just post the #s here. We'll make sure they go off. :-)

We could write a script to power call them on googlevoice every 5 mins. This is of course after you program a busy signal for thier return call. I'm sure he would find it weird all of his drug buddies changed their cricket wireless phone #s.

If you look at the Discussion tab on that page, you'll see that I questioned this. I think when the information go transferred from the original WIKI, something was left off of the page. I think CRON was supposed to be setup to call the script every five minutes. I (again) think that the SMS message gets stored in the database, then the script runs and looks for new SMS's addressed to the secret code.

However, that's all from memory (which as been questioned lately ), as I used the last script referenced, and just set it to send me an email every 20 minutes.

If you need the exact CRON information to run the script every 5 minutes, let me know. That I can't do from memory (though I should be able to by now, I've set up enough stupid cron files).

Damn, that ones really good. Would probably work too if I got the right girl for the job.
    Thanks for the tip...

Might do something like this after I decide the chase is over just to annoy his buddies!

to the OP, I'm very sorry to hear this, its a shame that stuff like this happens!

As far as this story goes, you did the right thing. I wouldn't cancel the service until you get this thief. The cops won't do a single thing and all sprint will do is ask you to pay $100 for another phone.

Take your time and be patient. He WILL screw up big time and at that point, you'll get all your money back, plus the monthly service he used, etc. It'll be worth it in the end. It just takes time.

I had a phone stolen, took my time, let it play out. He would do the same thing, turn the phone on and off. Finally, he slipped up. I found him in a dorm at a college. I got security, we went to the dorms, the security asked everyone who was in the dorms to meet in the lounge area, called the phone, boom caught the sucker.

It will pan out. TRUST ME.. They steal for MONEY. The greed will make him foul up at some point.

Your right man, it's mostly up to me at this point. Which is sad that I have plenty of info that an officer could really benefit from, and they just don't have interest in these things. BUT on a side note, if they bust some house party and people are having a good time, they are more than happy to write tickets and take people in...

Anyways, It's nice to hear that you actually got your justice in your situation.
Honestly, It's not the safest thing to do to try to work this out on my own but how great that would be to make an example out of a thief like this, and who knows, maybe get some press on the deal and prevent some future person from dealing with all this BS.

An Update for anyone who cares**

So after filing my police report, I was told that there would be a detective or specialist assigned to my case.
Because they stole my ID and credit cards and keys and all, they classified it as an identity theft.

I provided all the evidence I had gathered to the detective and I am currently waiting to see if anything (not holding my breath) will come of our justice system.
He instructed me to immediately shut off all services to the phone because leaving the service on is giving the thief the idea that he can get a couple of weeks worth of service from the phone if he steals another.

I also did initiate the remote wipe feature on the palm profile website, and my ESN number was blocked from the first time I contacted sprint.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like he has been using my phone for at least a week now so I haven't been tracking him anymore and there are no more minutes being used.

I'll pop back in sometime again if or when anything comes from all of this but I may have to just post all of the numbers he called online for people to make their own call to this theif's entourage
