I've used PalmOS Treos for the past 6 years, and found that the
single hard switch to turn off all sounds was a godsend. I expected
the Pre ringer switch to behave the same way, but only phone rings
and system sounds appear to be affected. The media output chain
appears to be completely unaffected. Worse, the media volume
controls are not available unless the currently running appication
    has actively selected that mode.

For example, I can have the ringer switched off, but if I launch
Sprint Navigation, I cannot be assured that entering a route will
be silent. The Pre may announce to the people around me that I am
"off route". Using the side volume buttons does not help, because
they only affect the ringer volume until after the Navigation app
has switched to guidance mode. This is a misfeature.

It seems to me that others must have encountered the same issue.
    Is there an easy solution?

In the absence of an easy solution, it seems to me there must be
a way to patch the system so that the ringer switch controls both
system notifications and media output. It's all software, right?

I experience the same thing. Ringer and system sounds are turned off...but not media, and other such sounds.

IMHO, this is a mistake... Some people like it. I think it departs from the spirit of the Treo on switch to mute the puppy.

Not much experience in these matters, but I do like the idea of a one-click, easy access "universal mute" implementation...

Kinda like a readily accessible varitaion on the "Airplane Mode" theme for sounds? Sounds good!

Why can't we have what BB's have. You can select certain utilities, contacts, alarms, etc... to be effected by the mute button. I don't think any mute button should mute a purposely set alarm.

It would also be nice to set for the mute to be over ridden if like your nanny was calling or someone you always want to get through.

I still don't understand how one company can see the light so clearly and the others can't even copy it.

Clearly the words of somebody who's never forgotten his mute switch was on and slept through an alarm before an important meeting!

I, on the other hand, have, and love the current functionality!

I wouldn't, however, mind if it were a user-selectable option in a prefs app.
