A quick few questions I seem I cannot get a solid answer to:

    1) Does the Pre work with s 5ghz signal or only 2.4?

    2) What modes does the pre support? a/b/g/n? (i know prob not N but what about A?)

    3) does it suppot AES or only TKIP?

    thanks

Palm's website on the Pre states this:

    "Wi-Fi 802.11b/g with WPA, WPA2, WEP, 802.1X authentication"

Nothing about 802.11a. The 802.11b/g standards by definition are only 2.4GHz, so no 5GHz support. Also, the WPA and WPA2 support suggests TKIP and AES will work. I have a home network with WPA security and AES authentication and it works fine with my Pre.
    Current device: Palm Pre
Former devices: Treo 755p, Treo 650

Excellent explanation. To add to that, 802.11a is for the 5GHz range. The Pre only works with b and g (2.4GHz) range.

My home network is also 802.11g WPA/AES and the Pre works fine with it.

Yeah, it's only 802.11b/g, no a or n. I use AES with mine flawlessly.

The FCC filing would answer your question. The Pre only has a 2.4ghz radio.
