I just finished a chat session with a Sprint rep. I am copying the relevant portion of the transcript. The rep researched the question on whether it is 4G compatible for a while before getting back to me:

    ****************

2:31:17 PM CUSTOMER I have a couple of questions,

first, is the Palm Pre 4g compatible, and second, would I need a

separate plan to use a 4g/3g modem or can it be linked to my

    existing simply everything plan?
2:32:08 PM Jennifer F I will be happy to assist you

please allow me one moment to access your account./
    ...
2:34:09 PM Jennifer F Thank you one moment please.
2:36:49 PM Jennifer F The Phone as Modem is not

compatible with the Simply Everything Plan, apologize.
2:37:25 PM Jennifer F I am checking on the 4G

    compatibility.
2:37:37 PM CUSTOMER Okay, thanks on the first answer
2:39:34 PM Jennifer F Thank you for your patience, I

    will have that information shortly.
2:39:59 PM CUSTOMER Take your time
2:44:20 PM Jennifer F The Palm pre is 4G compatible,

however in your zip code the 4g service in not available.

    ************************************
Take it for what you will, but Sprint keeps indicating it is a 4G device....

Glad I live in Baltimore, but I still only get 3G speeds on my Pre.....
    Qualcomm QCP 2700 -> ... Palm m125 ... -> Instinct -> Palm Pre

I tweet a lot about the Pre! @bshedwick

4G is currently active in Baltimore - but is being rolled out in Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas,Fort Worth, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland, and Seattle by the end of the year.

HurricaneDC - I have read numerous posts, articles, etc on whether or not the Pre has WiMax radio. Most point to the FCC filing as the only evidence whether or not there is one there. One blogger I read (and I wish I could remember which one - but have gone through too many articles) brought up the point that as long as the radio is not turned on, it does not have to be yet approved, but can be filed under an FCC addendum before it is activated by a firmware update. Again, it is all speculation (unless someone at this point has taken one apart and verified what is and isn't there) - which is why I said take it for what you will.

Look at page 322 of the manual and close this thread. We don't need more misinformation floating around...

P.S. - Third party confirmation that there's no 4G radio from Rapid Repairs.

I'm still miffed that they opened it in Balitmore and not DC. It's a wonder the WiMax towers haven't been stolen...

This still? The Pre doesn't have a 4g radio. End of story.

Yea, when I got my pre on launch day the sprint rep also told me:
    1) EAS contacts and calender would not sync, I'd have to use google
    2) ALL iPhone apps could easily be installed on the Pre, all I had to do was google it!

Clearly Sprint reps are both well informed and brilliant.

Definitely not 4G... Also just found why it has a 2400mhz radio... WiFi.

I hate to say this but I thought it had 4G or WiMax too and the reason:

I just watch a TV ad last night from Sprint! ON TV!

Sprint's ad was talking about it's WiMax stuff and in the ad the ONLY phone they showed was the Palm Pre.

So if there is confusing by us users, it's caused by Sprint!

    A TV AD!

Didn't we have this conversation 10 or so times about 3 months ago?
    Palm III-->Handspring Visor-->Sony Clie PEG-NR70-->no PDA -->Palm Treo 755p-->Palm Pre-->HP Veer

wishfull thinking on the rep's part. Looking at the Pre being broken down on a few differant sites and NOTHING has been said about a 4g radio. Seriously sprint would be hammering that in advertising. This chat rep scores a FAIL on product Knowledge...

Yeah I saw that too....they were advertising sprint and not Palm...if i remember correctly they did not even mention the Pre by name...They don't technically have a 4g phone yet, I guess the Pre is as close as they have approved so far...but it was very misleading!
