Telefonica Wins Exclusive for Pre In Four European Countries

Telefónica on Tuesday announced a deal to be the exclusive mobile phone network in four European countries for the much-anticipated Palm Pre, the handset widely seen as the most significant challenger to Apple’s iPhone.
The deal is a coup for Spain’s leading telecoms group, which beat off interest in the Pre from European rivals such as Vodafone.
Telefónica will be the exclusive mobile network for the Pre in Germany, Spain, the UK and Ireland. The smartphone – a mobile phone that doubles up as a mini-computer – is likely to go on sale in October, so that Telefónica can seek to maximise orders in the run-up to Christmas.
