I see a lot of posts comparing the iphone to the pre. Well I thought it would be fun to compare the pre to its little sibling the centro running TealOS. For the unitiated TealOS is a webos $15 skin cover available for download. It enables the card feature and multi tasking. This is an honest comparison of both phones out of the box so please dont say the Pre will have this and that on the next update.

Cost: Centro $55 (includes TealOS). Pre $200. Adv Centro (of course)
Calendar: This can go either way depending on your personal preference. While the ability to combine google/hotmail/palm calendars into one is a nice touch the calendar on the Centro is better. I don't put calendar entries into google etc. Centro has an agenda, monthly, and yearly view. Webos you can only view the current month and new entries dont allow month view.
Bluetooth: Adv Centro. There is no excuse for not allowing bluetooth file transfers on the Pre.
Ignore call: Adv Centro. You can ignore a call by sending a text. Not a big deal but it is a nice touch.
Infrared: Adv Centro. Also not a big deal. But being able to control a tv or beam files contacts (while slow) is a neat feature.

Memory: Adv Pre. 8GB can't complain. Centro has miniSD but only 2GB worked for me.
Web: Adv Pre. Smooth scrolling, Fast, and nice screen. Having Wifi helps. But where is flash and mpeg download capability.
Email: Adv Pre. Both can handle multiple email accts but pre takes it a step further.
Favorites: Adv Centro. You can put apps and phone numbers on the same favorite page. You get 5 pgs.
Camera: Adv Pre. Amazing quality for a 3mp cam.
Wifi: Adv Pre. Centro doesnt have it.
Music: Adv Centro. It comes bundled with Ptunes. Plays various files and includes audio streaming. Pre music player is bare bones at best.

Money Manager: Adv Centro. It comes bundled with Splash Money. While not the greatest it does allow you the option to keep track of spending.
Tasks: Adv Centro. The reminder includes time and month view. The Pre you have to look at another calendar with month view. No time reminder only days.
Sync: This could go either way. But I like having a free desktop app. So Adv Centro. Pre offers one file transfer. Then your only option is Missing Sync which is an extra $20.
Contacts: Pre's ability to combine various contacts from different sources is nice. However for the guy who doesn't use myspace/facebook or put info in hotmail/gmail etc synergy doesnt apply. Centro can transfer contacts to another phone via infrared or bluetooth. Adv Centro.

Voice Memo: Haven't found it on the pre yet. Adv Centro.
Search: Universal search is awesome yet it is not used to its full potential. For mac fans its like spotlight. Adv. Pre
Software: Adv Centro. So much bundled in the phone and a lot of free stuff out there. Filez, PTunes, Docs2Go. Pre can't record video while the Centro can.
Hardware: I like the rubber keyboards on both. I like the dedicated menu key on the Centro. I still have trouble opening the Pre. The overall look definitely goes to the Pre while the feel goes to the Centro's rubbery case. You can buy a matte finish for $20 or $70 (includes touchstone) for the Pre. I hate to pay extra though. This is a tie.

Conclusion: I like the pre even with all its quirks. WiFi and Sprint Navigation is a must for me hence the purchase of the Pre. I know there will be some cool updates in the future but being the fiscal conservative that I am and for those on the fence I say get the centro buy the $15 Teal OS and enjoy. Wait until the fall when all the updates have been released. Then the Pre will be ready for prime time.

Update: I guess this could have been titled PalmOS vs WebOS

One can no longer buy TealOS. It's a cool launcher for Palm OS. I use it and like it, but it's only a launcher. WebOS is the real deal of multitasking and synergy beauty. I say get the Pre and enjoy.

I love using tealos on my pre with classic - its like deja vu all over again.

I disagree on the question of search. Until the Pre can search the calendar, it's second rate.

Calendar? Meh, that'd be nice but email is a MUCH bigger priority imo.

You can ignore with text. Click center contact button while call is coming in. Then tap on SMS for their number. One extra tap, but it works on the Pre.

You can ignore a call by hitting the power button 2 times. Once to silence the ringer/vibrate, another to ignore the call.

Right, but how does this ignore the call with a text message?

Bluetooth: Adv Pre. IMHO, A2DP ability is more important than file transfer ability. (Audio Gateway made my 755P too unstable to use.)

An upgrade from Centro to the Treo Pro eliminates most of the things the Centro lacks.

+1 TealOS makes a PalmOS based device sing!
Makes my T|X usable, and when BT-paired with a cell phone it's fully functional.

I can't believe you guys are actually having this discussion. The Centro has an operating system from 6 years ago with a "SKIN" made to look something remotely close to the Palm Pre.

If I was a Web-OS developer reading this I would feel deeply insulted. Comparing between the two shows you really have no basic understanding of mobile technology.

Honestly, if it weren't for the outdated web browser the centro would be darn near my perfect phone. I've been waiting on the sidelines until some of the first gen issues with the pre are resolved.

    With my centro

    I have a stable device
    w/ good battery life
    excellent PIM
can sync with google calendar via outlook
w/ tealos gives a very nice representation of multitasking ( I know it's not real) but honestly in most apps it goes right back where I left off and that's good enough for me
    d pad
    always accessible keyboard
    tons of apps

I will replace it sometime maybe with the pixie if it comes out stable
    Palm V > samsung i500> treo 650 > treo 755p> Centro> Pre

If you're ok with the battery life on the Centro, the battery life on the Pre will likely be more than adequate. I had a Centro and the battery life on my Pre is as good or better. For me, the Centro was no more stable than the Pre is. I actually had more instability with the Centro. On the other hand, if the form factor on the Centro is what suits you best, the Pixie is probably for you.
