The phone nipple could have easily been a directional pad for doing precisely what you mention, but instead we have to rely on awkward key combos just to move back 3 spaces because we misspelled something.
I also would have liked to see a d-pad. It works pretty well the way they have it, but d-pads are so much easier. plus I haven't seen the up/down with the option key work yet. It at least doesn't work with word wrapped text.

I like the way the iPhone handles voicemails. It is slick as can be!

HTC hero looks to be the next sick hardware. I don't like HTC myself, their hardware seems of low quality to me. Then again from reading forums on the Pre, I would have to say Palm is on the way to being bottom dog in the hardware quality. Back on topic, Hero seems to have the solution with the touch + hard key issue, "a trackball". Personally I love trackball HID, use one on my desktop PC and occasionally hook it to my laptop, as the touchpad is horrible from time to time.

After all the forum and blog reading, I think I am staying with my Instinct until Palm has some magic update for the firmware / software and have teenagers put the hardware together instead of the adolescents they have building them now.

Supposedly you should be able to get to anywhere on the screen. For me i have consistently not been able to get to the right place if it is at the edge of the screen. Anywhere else is easy. The last letter if not. Of the let's say 20 times I have needed to get the the letter at the edge of the screen, I have been able to actually get to the beginning (or end) of the line about 3 times. That's it. Every other place is much easier to reach.

I had this problem, but I found that I was doing it wrong. I was used to my Ipod Touch and was trying to move the cursor by touching where the cursor was located and swiping. This made it impossible to move the cursor from 2nd to last letter to the last letter.

I found that once you have the cursor placed, you can swipe anywhere. For example, if you want to move the cursor right, just swipe right ANYWHERE on the screen with the orange button pressed.

This! The button is already there! Why not make it a 5 way? I know Apple says buttons aren't cool, but c'mon, it's already there!

Thank you! I thought mine had a bug or something, but I can never get to the first or last letter at the edges. Also you can't (or I haven't been able to) scroll in boxes: for example when entering my mail info it goes longer than the box, but if I want to edit a letter that isn't on the screen I have to delete the ones before it, very annoying!

I miss predictive text but what I really miss was the address book implementation. I loved that if I typed a friend's name that is in my address book it will capitalize it, or if I type a company name that's in my address book it will correct it such as capitalizations and apostrophes.

Wow man thanks that makes a huge difference, I mean I still prefer the iphones version better because it zoomes the thing in but this deffinatelly works.

The pixels are more compressed on the pre, but the resolution is the same...
