I've got 5 cracks that extend to an edge of the screen, effectivel cutting off any responsivity on the upper parts of the crack. I'm sure I've got some underneath the gesture area as well as I can't even us the back gesture.. or use the phone at all. There are 3 or 4 small cracks, too.

I really hope this doesn't happen to any other people..

So what did you pay for your Pre? The full $500+ amount?

i think he paid the new customer price for adding a line. add a line equals new customer i think. so 299.99 - MIR. then cancel that line and transfer phone to his number after the 30 days.

*edit* hmmmm. not a bad idea! hahaha

So I was just thinking, now I know this could all be from pressure points that cause this, but how many of you are using the touchstone? (I don't have the touchstone) but I read that they get "hot" now i dont know how hot it gets, but if it gets hot enough and than it put in your pocket, isn't possible that the screen would be weak at that point and the slightest pressure to it could crack it???? I don't know just a thought.

I also wonder if the super cases people protect their pre with is keeping the phone from breathing.

Like the super tight leather cases, so if you can post what case you use

When people have been doing it for years without a problem with other touch screen phones, and then it happens within days of purchasing a new phone, that suggests there is a problem with the new phone. Especially when all the pictures I've see show the cracks starting from the same general location (button/gesture area) and radiating upwards. I haven't seen any horizontal cracks yet, they have all been more or less vertical.

My Centro and Treo 800w were always thrown in my pocket but then again, the touch screen was recessed. Not sure if that gave it extra protection or not.

With the Pre, many of us are sliding the phone open in the general area where the cracks are starting so I have to wonder if that contributes to the problem at all.

Could have been a manufacturing issue. Maybe something got over torqued during assemble and weakened or started a small crack that got worse over time.

    Phone in use? in hand
Phone not in use? on a clean surface or back in leather side case.
IF you read the posts, you will see that it isn't only people that put in their front pocket that are having the problem.

I'm not sure why you think the price of the phone has anything to do with putting them in your front pocket. For example, I paid the same for my Centro as my Pre when it first came out. Carried it in my front pocket for the past 2 years without any problem.

Also, can you tell me why you WOULD expect these sorts of things to happen? Exactly what about carrying the phone in your front pocket causes the screen to crack in the manner seen on this thread?

And I don't get how people keep making excuses for Palm. Millions of people carry phones in their pockets every day. I've carried my Treos that way since the original 600, and carried my Palm Pilots that way before I had Treos. No cracked screens.

If you've actually read these posts, the screens aren't cracking because people are banging them into things. All the evidence points to a manufacturing flaw. Stop being such a fanboy.

It's true. I'm as big a fan for this phone as anyone else, but I'm not going to lie and say that this isn't the result of something on palm's end (whether direct or not). Fact is, this shouldnt happen if youre using the phone as intended. People shouldn't have to worry about using the gesture button or opening the phone a certain way because phones are supposed to be able to hold up to that abuse. 1 week of use should never translate to a broken phone from constant use, they are supposed to last at least a couple years with daily use.

Exactly same thing happened to my phone last night. I thought it was just me. Any issues getting a replacement phone?

Can you post some pictures for documentation/reference? Also, (if the screen works at all) can you enter ##786# in the phone application and post your "warrantydate" (scroll down the screen).

*I* didn't have any problem getting a replacement, however most others seems to have had to make a claim on TEP. Did you have TEP?

because a phone isn't suppose to crack from just being inside of someone's jeans. Its unheard of, never heard of such issues with iphones, storms, etc. However dropping your phone, thats a different story. Sounds like a design flaw to me

I have been thinking about getting a Pre, but I'm a bit gun shy (I'm a treo 700p owner, have pity on my poor soul.) and this thread has me pretty scared.

I have noticed something in common with most if not all of the incidents of cracked screens. No one has said (or admitted) that they have actually seen the crack forming or growing. Everyone seems to say something like "I put the phone away and the next time i used it, it was cracked."
So that has me thinking that maybe the cracks are not due to pressure being applied to the phone, but instead are caused by the phone cooling off after being heated up from use and then being put away for some time.
Can anyone who has a cracked screen add any info to confirm or deny this theory?

i hope this doesn't screw me, but from the 6th when i got the phone, the phone was in a pants pocket. most of the time with a small wallet, and even sometimes with keys.

    no case, and
    no cracks yet. fingers crossed.

This is bad. I'm on the waiting list for one, but will probably pass when the call comes in. I'm not capable of treating a phone with kid gloves. If if can't go in my front pocket most of the time it won't work for me. Really disappointed.

If a phone cant survive in normal use without an added case for protection then it is defective and should be replaced or redesigned.

A case is for convenience or protection from unusual amounts of wear and tear or accidental damage. It is not mandatory and it should not be.

Ive been carrying my phone in my front pocket in its pouch whenever I go anywhere since June 6th and it is fine.

I have carried now two separate pres in my front pocket without any issues (the proximity sensor went out on the first one). I have been following this thread the whole way and it sounds like everyone who has had cracked screens has not really done anything different than I have. That being said, it almost seems like a roll of the dice whether or not your screen cracks. It definitely still makes me nervous though and I am tempted not to carry it in my front pocket anymore. If that nervousness alone will persuade you in any way not to get one, I would hold off until this is figured out. If you like to gamble, I would say you should roll the dice. You would probably get better odds than you would at any casino.
