    Hi Everyone,

Sorry if this is a foolish question, but I couldn't find the answer:

If I purchase a standalone Pre, paying full price, would I then be able to use it with some of the other low-rate carriers such as Boost or Cricket?

Will it work out-of-the box? Would it first need to be "unlocked", whatever that means? Would even that not help?

Would both voice and web work?

    Thanks in advance!

*sigh* Boost uses iDen technology, so no.

And no, there exists no ROM to flash it to Cricket.

also the pre is very data intensive by nature, so you may end up with a huge bill..

Akula34: Thanks for your reply. Because I don't understand the technical terms you used, forgive me for asking again: Are you saying there CANNOT be a way to transfer it to Cricket, or that such a way does not yet exist?

Toolkit: Both of these carriers offer unlimited web plans.

    How about Verizon?

And now that the hackers are hacking ... is there any news in that regard?

BTW - What is IDEN technology?

CDMA phone are locked by each carrier. You can't put a PRE from Sprint on another CDMA carrier - period.

IDEN is what Nextel uses. Here's a complete listing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDEN#Co..._iDEN_networks

I would be looking to do the same but here in the UK providing it's not locked, I don't think it will be. Anyway, can you set the Pre so it doesn't sync everything constantly from the web? Maybe set it so it only syncs when using WiFi at home?
Just curious if the always connected Pre can be disconnected ?

In the UK you would have a GSM phone, not a CDMA phone.

They won't flash a used phone, go read their FAQ's. You can only use their phones on their network.

Do you really think they would post on their website that they are stealing customers from other carriers be flashing their equipment? Get real man. It happens all the time. I'm not saying its right or that I would do it but there are literally 1000's of Sprint phones on cricket right now. Its the sole reason that Sprint phones fetch decent money on ebay.

I'm not saying its Cricket corporate but they pay their franchises up to $50 for every new user they sign up. So its a pretty simple deal for them. Flash a phone and get paid $50.

I know it will be but the online services are the same, the way synergy works. Can you switch off the syncing with the facebook, google mail etc at all?

Actually I used to work for Cricket and most CDMA phones can be flashed to them just not all of the features will work all of the time. In the case of Sprint phones I know for a fact that the HTC Touch, Mogul, Diamond and etc. as well as all of the the other windows mobile phones and Palm phones not only could be flashed but everything worked and you even got True internet. Sprint Tv and other network specific programs would not work but weather text internet navigation and such did. Now I am not sure about the new Web OS but I am sure someone will know.

    Amazing! Thanks for the links!

So if someone owes Sprint $200 on unpaid bills, they can get their phone flashed to Cricket and use it. If someone steals a CDMA phone, they can have it flashed and use it at Cricket. Why does this not seem legal?
