While this is bad for Sprint, think about how well this ranks the Pre against the iPhone! It just show's Apple's "locked-down" attitude. While I understand this is 90% the fault of the carriers, it gives the Pre a huge advantage.

True enough. But people keep picking AT&T and VZ over Sprint despite this, and it's not just because they have phones that Sprint doesn't.

Coverage, family plan issues, free in-network calling, bundling with your phone bill, etc... all play roles here.

The logic of your position (comparable plans are always cheaper on Sprint, so people will pick Sprint) implies that Sprint should be at least tied with AT&T and VZ today, but it isn't. Rather, it's a distant third.

Comparable depends on what you are comparing. The Pre requires an Everything Plan, a branded PDA on AT&T requires a $30 data plan which can be attached to an existing family plan for a total cost of $40 which is cheaper than any Pre Plan. Use an unbranded smartphone (e.g. Treo Pro) and you can use a $15 plan for a total of $25 on an existing family plan.
