ie, a flashing lamp when a call or message comes in thru yahoo, etc, or sms.

Many people were hoping the button would light up and be programmable to give notifications. I hope that turns out to be true!

Have there been any device diagrams in the literature that's leaked? Usually there's a device diagram pointing to all the external buttons and features (such as this one we're discussing). There's no visible LED indicator ("lamp"... hehe) in any of the pics I've seen but I wouldn't be surprised if it's camoflagued into the sleek black surface of the phone and only visible when it's actually flashing up.

There are (two? four?) white circles in the gesture area that light up when you gesture across it. I don't see why they couldn't be used for a soft glow blink to indicate notification, to be turned off as soon as screen is activated.

I don't know whether or not they are used in this fashion, but it's certainly make sense.

They could even quickly identify what type of notification based on which light is glowing.

Dave how about vibrate or I wonder if it has audible alerts like for instance if you get an im it will play a diff tune then if you received an sms. My old htc used to have that I love that feature!

a series of tones would help, as long as i'd hear them against any background noise that may be present when I'm getting a message. I prefer a blinking light, plus a tone alert. I wouldn't always wear the phone, so vibrate would only work if it's strong enough to be felt (some phone's vib is wimpy), and I haven't placed it on a desk or counter. I tend to remove my phone when I'm sitting, simply for comfort's sake.

Have you seen the movie Echelon conspiracy? Sounds like you need that bluetooth earpiece that reads all his messages to him bc he wasn't allowed to have a phone in the casino LOL That would be DOPE!

I am the same way. At times I am in meetings that I cannot have it making noise but need to know when an Email or SMS etc.. come in while it is siting on my desk. Same when I am in a restaurant. My Treo blinks slow when I missed a call and fast when I have E-mail, this is fundamental!!!

I really hope someone comes up with a viable solution. ii

This would drain the battery alot quicker than the light, especially if you message frequently.

I think the center button also lights up when pressed. Software fix to make that blink as well?

It must be something that Palm thought of.. previous Treo models have the blinking LED capability.

My guess is that Palm won't do this out of the box because it would be a drain on the battery. It's too obvious a feature to not have.

    If so, then:
    1) Hopefully some unofficial hack comes out to make this feature available
    2) I am more worried about battery life

Nah, I doubt it's a battery issue--a blinky led wouldn't take much juice at all.

If not there out of the box, they could add it through an update just like my instinct did

You know, the more I think about it, the more I realize the the blinking LED on my 755p is pretty worthless. I know you can customize it to do special things with Butler, but really, I get no significant information from it. It's really only useful when it's NOT blinking (okay, no need to check anything). But that's not too often.

I think I can live without the blinking LED. But that's just one man's opinion.

i personally use the LED every day. A lot of times I turn my sound AND vibrate off, and like to have the visual notification. Sometimes I'll specifically want just visual notifications for txts or IMs.

A momentary blink of an LED uses negligible battery power. IF they can't make a phone with a message indicator, they shouldn't be building phones in the first place.
