That was just a rumor I've read,

Honestly, no one but the people at the top know what they will do at the conference.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

Even if they do announce the phone at WDDC next month, how long until it actually comes out?
The first time they announced the original iPhone it didn't come out for another six months.

On the topic on background tasks.
On a jailbroked iPhone there's an app called backgrounder that will allow you to run any task in the background.
Granted it's one task, but it just goes to show it can just be done in software .

But it's likely between the conference and mid-September because that's when Apple mainly releases things. They also won't be dumb enough to let original iPhone users try to "escape". Of course this won't work on all but it's sure to work on quite a few looking for new subsidized hardware.
