Let's face it, making calls on the Pre will be the main thing we do. So, how many clicks will it take to call a family member that is programmed for quick dial?

    On my Centro, it's THREE:

1 - press the phone button
2 - press then center button to unlock
3 - press and hold the appropriate quick call number

Will the Pre match or beat it? I sure hope so!!

Assuming it has support for programming keys for quick dialing:

    1. Slide keyboard out. (This turnes on the screen)
    2. Press and hold appropriate programmed key.

    There!

    Open the slide and dial.
    Or
Touchscreen slide to unlock, press the phone button, and dial on screen.

I hope so! That's ONLY TWO CLICKS. But you are assuming we won't have to unlock first. We'll see.

On some of the videos, the demonstrator slides the phone open, while it is off, turning on the display in the dashboard...

    Or...

    1. Slide open keyboard
    2. Press first letter of contact's name
    3. Tap screen to call

The benefit of this is you can do it for every contact, application, google search, etc. - basically slide, press, tap any function of the phone.

    +1

Knowing Palm for their simplicity they will definitely implement this.

    I'd say either:
    1. slide keyboard out
    2. press and hold for speed dial

    or

    1. slide keyboard out
    2. type the first few letters of the persons first or last name
    3. select appropriate contact to dial (with maybe a default quick call option)

    Well,....touch screen only:

    1. Turn on phone
    2. Unlock screen (similar to iPhone, but different)
    3. Press Phone App on the quick launch.
    4. Dial.

    Otherise it'll be:
    1. Slide open phone
    2. Dial a name or start of a name
    3. tap phone number to call.

My phone takes 1. Hit the button on the bluetooth headset and say the name.

Seriously though, I'd imagine that it will be as fast at making a call as a dumbphone as that is one thing that many smartphones have problems with. Sliding out the keypad and hitting a speed dial key seems fine as does typing in the first few letters of the last name. I would like to be able to make a quick phone call without opening the slider though.

What I would like to see is an option to have the device display the numpad by default when the screen is turned on then you can hold a key for speed dial or type in the number. The OS seems perfectly capable of having this as a customization option.

For the record, texting/messaging is the Number 1 use I get out of my phone. That's something I do everyday. Phone calls I do a couple times a week.

Although I do really like that slide out keyboard and go idea, without having to unlock. I would love to see that in the Pre. Seems so obvious, I'm going to be slightly disappointed if it's not there.
