Going by the estimated unit cost according to isuppli it is possible. Palm's profit would not be negatively effected as every unit will be sold to Sprint at the set wholesale cost.

The most expensive phone on sprint right now that's 0 after rebates is $300 from my brief look at the website. The pre is speculated to retail at over $500 so I think the $150-199 estimate is more accurate.

Damn my not knowing a thing about parliamentary procedure, can you object?
You may object to the consideration of a motion, but it requires 2/3 to carry versus a simple majority to fail a main motion.

If the Pre really costs $138 to build... I give it benefit of doubt and say $150 to build. Palm makes 50% profit and sells to Sprint at $300 a piece. Sprint ties people to $70/Month Plan for 2 years, gamble and give Pre for free.

I have not done any calculations but, I wonder how many new customers they need to obtain in order to be profitable with a $0 Pre?

BTW: This can be all very possible, so don't be hating. Sprint and Palm seem stupid, but not stupid enough to go against 3.0 on the 7th of June without some sort of surprise...

He titled the thread: "What if: Surprise Surprise: Pre is FREE after Rebate on June 7th"

I am sure Sprint and Palm are coming up with a super game plan for the Pre, given these tough economic times. WebOS eliminates the Microsoft cost. Could Sprint eat the price of the Pre with a two year contract? I don't know. I would think they could with a 2 year contract.

Myself, I am waiting for the unlocked GSM version which I am sure will be at least 6 months down the road, and I'll have to pay full retail in the end.

    I'll say it again:

I'd almost rather have it be $199 so I know I'll be getting a phone that is made from good materials and constructed well. Free phones (that aren't already proven, IE Razr) tend to have a negative connotation to them. I mean, I would still get it, but I would probably wait for the reviews instead of just snatching it up instantly.

Cost after rebate should in no way affect your decision to buy. This phone isn't targeted at the first time phone buyers. People that are buying the high end smartphones do so because they have done at least a tad bit of research (iPhone excluded because there are the people that buy anything Apple tells them to). When I do my shopping I look at the phones in my price range. If I want to spend $99 and I see one has $200 in rebates and the other has $100...I'm probably going to look more closely at the one withe bigger rebate.

People, especially in this economy, are looking for a good, reliable product, at a great price. This is why car companies price SUVs so high and then tell you that you get $7000 off if you come in this weekend. We are a consumer driven society. Consumers want to SAVE money. Pricing at a higher pricepoint just to make a product look better doesn't make sense.

I personally think that $99 is the sweet spot. It will seem like a good phone as you say, but it will be half the price of it's competition. I'm guessing the new iphone will be at minimum $299 after rebate... if they can come in at one third of the price, tech reviewers are going to hit the iPhone hard as being a poor value for $ purchase. $99 probably won't happen though.

Sprint will not lose money on the phone. The price after rebate + early termination fee + 1 month of service has to be > than the original phone value. Once the phone is out for a few months than they can assess the rate in which people return the Pre and think about increasing the rebate.

I love how you make this whole post about how customers are driven to save money, and the price point of the phone needs to be X amount of dollars, BLAH BLAH. While suckers like you are looking at the X, the cell phone carrier's gonna give you that Y amount, which is quite a bit more expensive than a one-time $99 fee.

BTW, I've got Palm Pre's for FREE... just comes with a $450 monthly service fee. Great deal!

Apple will keep the price the same for 3.0 at $199, but probabaly release a less verision at $99.

Ahh... gotta love how the apparent anonymity of the internet brings out the best in people. I'm more than capable of adding up numbers on my own, but thank you for pointing it out to me. Quite a bit of anger directed toward a very neutral opinion. Perhaps you need more sleep.

One thing to consider, if the Pre is free or $99, people might start to think "is it really any good if they're practically giving it away?" There's also the mentality of "you get what you pay for".

Even if people do want to save money, they may wonder what's up, if a "flagship" phone is free or cheap.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!
