So when you talked about the iPhone lacking apps, you were specifically referring to slingbox?

maybe the occasional youtube video but no watching video is not a big selling point for me, even if it was though i would still prefer a device smaller than the iphone, it is a bit too big imo

and i would much rather drag and drop than be forced to install some bloated POS software on my computer

Gotta disagree due to needing corrective lenses, LOL! The screen on the iPhone/Touch is excellent for video viewing, especially for the visually challenged, LOL!

BTW, most phones that sync have bloated "official" software for Windows. Mac has a cleaner solution, I believe. But even if you use iTunes on Mac, it's way better than the Windows version I hear.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

hmm I disagree that that app store concept was started by APPLE.
You might want to consider that handango selling apps for WinMo for a long long time , probably before APPLE invented iPod.
Check it out Mobile Software and Games for your PDA or Smartphone : Handango

The difference is that APPLE made the store ridiculously simple to buy and install. I give full credit to them on that. APPLE's success comes from making things in a simple way. MP3 players were around long time and so are softwares that manage music. But none including the SONY were interested in making it simple.

Dr. Cerna at my hospital uses Epocrates on his Treo 755p, I use Skycape (Dr. Drugs, I am a CRNA) on my Samsung Ace and I just installed the free version of Epocrates. He has bought Palm stock in the past; and I am encouraging him to get the Pre when when released on Alltel (soon to be Verizon).

There is a huge difference between Handago and Apple's App Store. Buying apps from Handago directly from the device is not that simple, unless they have changed since I last tried to.

It not just the screen size. Being able to download movies and television shows from itunes is a big plus (i just finished the 12 part Watchmen animated comic television show). I am not sure the Pre will be able to do this from the amazon store.

Handango is a disgrace. They bullied their way into stealing money from developers for years. I am happy that most of the mobile OS's will now have their own app store. This will hopefully be the end of Handango.

This is true. Let's give credit where credit is due--the iPhone is a great media device. Probably the Pre won't quite equal its ease of use.

But you may (warning: speculation) be able to do some things over the air with the Pre that you need your computer to do with the iPhone. Not sure though.

Agree , charges for simple alarm applications are in the range of 15 to 20 dollars.

APPLE is business model is based on socialism principles with a capitalistic motto. Give the apps for free or at cheaper prices, yet make healthy money for yourself and partners plus promote innovation.

Personally me thinks Mircrosoft had all the things needed for ( the platform, third party, tools ...) doing mobile phone business except the hardware.

Where they failed is they never simplified the process to begin with.
They charged more money ( 5 bucks is more money compared to 15 bucks).
I found very few apps for free ort= under five bucks.

But watch out, APPLE has to work harder to find some niche area once others copy their model of selling cheap easy installable apps.

DRM is not a plus, LOL! I think Amazon's videos are DRM too.

Of course I would love to see DRM free files. But Apple knows that this is a competitive advantage for the iPhone. Last I checked they were in the business of making money. Still, it would be great if anybody could download itunes movies and shows and load it on their device of choice.

Its not what Handango charged the end users, its the percentage they took from the developers. I will not shed a tear when they go belly up.

None of my videos are DRM, but are transcoded into iPod compatible files. DRM is likely being forced more by the studios than Apple or Amazon. The TV and movie industries seem worse than the music industry concerning DRM, if you can believe that.

Yeah, the strength of the itunes store is the different type of video content they have. I am assuming you rip your dvds. The process to track down the dvd for every video I would want to watch (whether a movie or tv show) is far more complicated on clicking on the "buy now" button in itunes. Plus, the less technical people will not know how to do that themselves.

even so, I do remember a program on my 700p that allowed me to browse programs and download them OTA. It was an actual program, you loaded money into an account, and it was its own app store. This was long before iphone. And it wasn't just a mobile version of their website. It did work rather seamlessly, but the amount of content wasn't as great as going to their regular site.

They still offer something similar for WM phones. I'm not sure if they still have it for Palm OS phones but I know they had one for WM. But it didn't work too well on 320x320 resolution WM.

I stopped using it at one point. Might've been when I went to the Centro and started from scratch on the programs I wanted on it. I didn't really buy any programs for the Centro so it didn't matter. I tried looking for it but haven't been able to find it. Surprised there isn't a letterbox/pillarbox type option for programs that were made to work with different resolutions.
