Personally i can live with 8gb. My only concern was that it will get ripped in the reviews for it. They aren't going to acknowledge those type of things you mention in amazon. What they will do is compare it with the iphone like they do every phone it seems.

    Imagine the summary:

The good: synergy, notifications, multitouch, browser, blah blah

The bad: only 8gb, (let's hope that "no desktop sync" isn't in there)

The 8GB Touch is cheaper than the 16GB and much cheaper than the 32GB, that's why it sells more.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

So 16GB cannot be the magic number. Thanks for your help.

It's the top selling iPod Touch.
It's the top-selling SDHC memory card.
    It's the top-selling iPod Nano.

EIGHT gigabytes. And it will be the onboard memory of the top-selling Sprint smartphone when Palm launches. Good for them. Glad we settled that.

    "WE" didn't settle ANYTHING.

Installing 16GB is thinking ahead, installing 8GB is not. 16GB prices are coming down. Many good new phones either have 16GB or will support 16GB cards. If 8GB is as far as you can go with the Pre when there are 16GB devices and possibly 32GB coming soon, no thanks.

Sorry, but there's no basis for this at all.

If price was the ONLY motivator, 2 or 4GB cards would be the topselling SDHC card at Amazon. They are not. The top two are EIGHT gigabyte cards. A 16GB card doesn't appear until 9th place. EIGHT is the magic spot. Everything else is speculation.

Which is why the Pre will start with 8GB. Palm and Sprint can't afford for this to be priced significantly higher than the most best selling iPhone.

Prices are still a bit too high on 16GB. 8GB cards are selling online at VERY GOOD prices. People won't even look at the smaller cards when the bigger one is so cheap online.

And an expansion slot would have sufficed for those who need more storage. They would have had both ends covered. Price and storage.

The 16GB best seller on Amazon is $35. Nice try, tho.

There's always another feature any manufacturer can add to make someone happy. And there's always another feature they can subtract to keep bean counters happy. The Pre is a pretty good balance of the two.

Exactly. Consumers can buy 8gb them for as low as $5 probably cheaper for major buyers like who ever makes the Pre.

Yes 16 GB is mvoing into the current sweet spot, it is increasing in sales compared to the 8gb iphone

And every day for months and months on end the 16 gb has been increasing in relative sales to the 8gb. Pre won't be moving in numbers for six months from now. Its 8gb will seem paltry in numbers.

You are also "dodging" the fact that this has become an established metric for value.

And that the OP mentioned the iPhone and that is what the comparison is going to be. The identity of the Pre will largely be an iphone alternative. That is sprint sinterest and they will be doing almost all the advertising.

Which is why you'll likely see a 16GB Pre at some point.

No, it's not. Not at the largest online retailer (whose sales are pretty representative of brick and mortar trends as well).

I'm going to look up the $35 16GB card, I haven't seen it that cheap anywhere!!! Though I bet the catch is it's only Class 2.

P.S. All I saw was $53 under search 16GB microSD. I guess I'll have to search the hard way.

P.P.S. I saw $36 for full size SD, which phones no longer take. But the micros are still around $53-$60, although that's better than the $100 in brick and mortar stores.

What is it with people here thinking the height of wit is repeating someone's words back to them verbatim? We can all do better than that.

Why not just provide these 16GB and 8GB iPhone numbers you keep referring to and get it over with? I've asked for them several times, and nada. The Amazon numbers I am referring to are accessible to anybody at any time and they cover more than just phone sales. 8GB is the sweet spot. Has been. Don't know how much longer it will be, and neither do you.

You are also "dodging" the fact that this has become an established metric for value.
If it's a fact, prove it. Don't underline the words. What is that supposed to do?

And that the OP mentioned the iPhone and that is what the comparison is going to be. The identity of the Pre will largely be an iphone alternative. That is sprint sinterest and they will be doing almost all the advertising.
Of which you haven't seen anything but this, which doesn't mention or hint at iPhone in any way, shape, or form (I already know you'll quote the Ars Technica quote that mentions iPhone, but this "accolade" has to be clicked on to be read and is fleeting at best).

Its simple, if 8 gig is not enough for you dont buy it!

This thread was about RAM and somehow got turned into yet another storage discussion, LOL!

Yes it is, it shows the 16 gb increasing in share to the 8gb and the 8gb decreasin in share of iphone sales. that is a fact on amazon.

Because the OP did what the tech blogs do and will continue to do, what Sprint will do, adn what consumers will do, compared it it iphone immediately. It was mentioned that making a claim on ram will lead most customers to immediately think of storarge memory instead.
