So yes. Apple could very well have continued in the mobile phone business if the iPhone had been a massive failure. More importantly, they would've continued to be in business period. Palm, on the other hand, is one failed product away from oblivion.
I never doubted Apple could continue in the business. Simply that they wouldn't. They would've made the same "adjustments" (rapidly dropping the price, software updates, maybe the app store) that they did this time, but if it was a failure on par with Apple TV, it would share the same red-headed stepchild fate. Apple knows how to cut their losses and move on.

I agree completely. But I only brought up the comparison to underscore the fact that Palm's situation is very different from Apple's. This isn't about the fate of a product or even a product line, but a company.

That's why I expect the Pre sooner than later. June is iPhone season, at least theoretically, and Palm would lose the mindshare it has at the moment to wait that long. Of course, there's might be technical or contractual reasons why they have to release the Pre later, but from a purely strategic point of view, it's in Palm's interest to strike while the iron is hot.

Well, here's my email exchange with Sprint CS this morning:

Original Question: everything messaging with data pack
Question: I am currently on a shared family plan, with Power Vision on
only 1 of 4 lines. Is it possible to get the Everything Messaging Plan,
and add the $15 Data Pack to only 1 line? The other 3 lines on my
business account do not need data.

A second question: Do you know if the Palm Pre (not Treo Pro), when
released, will require an Everything plan, or would I be able to upgrade
to the Pre and retain my existing plan?

Speaking of the Pre, is there a release date for this phone?

Thank you for contacting Sprint. I understand your concern about plan
change, adding the $15.00 data pack and the Treo? pro by PalmŪ phone.

Currently, the Fair & Flex Family 800/ plan is active on the account.
You can change this plan to the any one of our available Everything
Messaging Plans. Also, the $15.00 Data Pack can be added only any one
    line of your account.

You can view our all available plan on our www.sprint.com Website.

Plan change is not required with the "Treo? pro by PalmŪ phone. It can
be activated with any plan(with your existing plan as well). This
handset will be released on February 15, 2009.

Thank you again for contacting Sprint. We appreciate your business.

    Sincerely,

    Original Message Follows:
    ------------------------
Thank you for the quick response.

To be clear though, I was asking about the Palm PRE phone, (not the
Pro). Can you tell me if the Palm PRE will require an Everything plan,
and when the Palm PRE will be available for purchase?

    Thanks again,

    Thank you for your reply.

I am sorry for the break down in communication in the previous reply
    email.

Currently we are not offering the Palm PRE phone.

Once, it is decided to launch this phone, you will see promotional
campaigns related to the launch date and the features of the handset on
our Web site and other promotional media.

Thank you again for contacting Sprint. We appreciate your business.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver M.

So it would appear that not ALL CSRs think he Pre is coming out on 2/15, and some think the Pro is coming out on that date.

And (in relation to another thread), it would appear that an Everything plan is not required with all new Smartphones.

It is required however for the current MIR on any of the smart(dumb)phones that are offered
  6. #246
Correct, as of this post, the only phone that I know of that is limited by the Everything Plans is the "InStink".

I think we know what you're saying, but is it going to be required to activate the Pre? That is the big question. It would be nice to get the MIR, but that has nothing to do with the plan and question asked to CS.

Hey guys, I was on the phone with two different retention people yesterday for some issues...

And they both told me Pre is launching on Feb 15th!!... and they were pretty sure about it.

Every time people ask for clarification on that they person checks again and finds the retentions person was talkign about the Pro.

The pro has a sku and information readout on it, the Pre does not.

I absolutely asked both specifically about what phone we were talking about... the slider, iPhone like, etc... and they both knew what I was talking about...

I personally don't believe it is coming out that soon,

but its interesting that it is such a strong rumor everywhere...

If there was going to be a 2/15 launch, maybe we would see a super bowl commercial to to kick it all off?

I would think Palm doesn't want to spend $3 million for 30 seconds.... Although that is some great exposure.

It would be great to see this phone released on 2/15. But ONLY if it's ready. Palm/Sprint cannot afford to have this phone hit the market with significant issues (ala Blackberry Storm). However, if it's ready, sooner would definately be more advantageous than later. You don't want to give your competitors (read A-P-P-L-E) a chance to make adjustments and release a new phone (or updates) around the same time as you release the Pre.

I find it hard to believe that so many people would report the exact same rumor if there was no chance whatsoever of it happening... There has to be at least an ounce of truth in this date.
Or maybe that is just wishful thinking on my part...
    Treo 180 (T-Mo) --> Treo 600 (T-Mo) --> Treo 180 (T-Mo) --> Treo 650 (T-Mo) --> Treo 650 NC (Cing) --> Treo 680 (Cing) --> Pre (Sprint)

Someone should ask the Sprint people for the SKU number of the PRE.

Multiple repetition derives from interst, anticipation, hope and the ciruclar nature of rumor. It does not mean there are actually multiple serious sources or even a single serious source.

Seeing that a new iPhone is rumored to rear its head in the usual June time frame, I think it would be horrible for Palm if they would release it as late as June! What ever fire they ignited for the Palm will be nothing but a fizzle then, and we all know that Apple has the marketing muscle to raise the new iPhone back to god like status in no time. Hell all they have to do is to make copy & paste available and the Apple faithful will flock to Apple and AT&T stores in droves. Stick in a multi core cpu and even more powerful graphics processor, and noone will pay attention to Palms little Pre, which will then, just like many "iPhone killers" before it, like just another failed attempt.

We want it right, we want it now, Palm has no choice but get it's **** in gear. If you ask me, this whole Feb 15 rumor thing is a great (and cheap) marketing campaign from both Palm and Sprint to keep the buzz alive! Hell it's working if you ask me!

Nope: The fine print for the Treo Pro says an Everything plan OR a regular plan with an add-on data pack.

Nope, that is the Pro not the Pre. Hesse mentioned the everything plans himself when he did the joint announcement with the Instinct and did it again with the Pre. He did not with the Pro.
