Bluetooth Failing Pre 2

My wife has paired her Pre 2 with the Bluetooth thingy in our Honda Odyssey. It worked fine for 18 months and then it just stopped working well. The level of the audio dropped to a barely usable level. My Pre 2 paired with the car works fine, no level problems.

I really don't want to doctor the phone to reinstall the bluetooth stack since she has apps that are no longer available in the catalog, is there a way to install just the bluetooth stuff? Do you think it is software or hardware?

I have noticed that if my phone volume is turned down, the audio over my Acura Bluetooth will be barely audible.

Have her turn her phone volume all the way up and the test the volume over Bluetooth.
