I installed this version: Download | Ubuntu

but the webos internals site for the metadoctor says

"NOTE THAT USING CYGWIN ON WINDOWS IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED AND WILL MAKE YOUR PHONE FAIL TO BOOT "

    and

"Download Ubuntu 11.04, look for the Ubuntu Desktop Edition, not the Windows Installer "

so, did I download the wrong thing??????????????

Installing Wubi from Windows will set up a dual boot configuration. Booting Wubi uses a virtual disk file on NTFS.
