Hands-On: Palm Pre 2 : Palm Pre 2 (Phone Scoop)

    From the review:

"The biggest and most welcome improvement to the hardware is the keyboard. Palm, changed the shape of the keys, and gave them much better travel and feedback. It still feels a bit cramped, but typing is much more satisfying on the revised hardware.

As disappointed as I am with the overall same-ness when comparing the Pre to the new Pre 2, the real changes were made under the hood.

The Pre 2 has a 1GHz processor, and the webOS 2.0 platform absolutely FLIES now. There is absolutely no delay when performance UI actions, such as multitasking, sorting through cards, and swiping around the menus. The speed improvements are real, and definitely appreciated.

Other webOS 2.0 updates are harder to define. The most obvious is the new Stacks feature. Stacks allows users to group cards based on activity or subject matter, and sort through tasks faster. It lets users tie-together actions and my first impression is that once users get over the learning curve, they'll come to rely on Stacks for multitasking.

The other big change up is the new search feature. Now, users have a lot more control over what and how webOS performs searches, and it appears to be fairly powerful.

The Pre 2 is going to be available soon from SFR in France. The model on hand was a prototype, and Palm asked that we note it is not a final, production model."

hey, anyone notice that pre 2 was running on verizon wireless' 3G network and not wifi?

that means the cdma phone is out there being tested by vzw.

release date hopefully isn't too far off.

more importantly, I hope webOS 2.0 is being tested for all original pre plus phones.

So, rather than come up with a solution to the crappy USB cover, they just scrapped it? I know it's minor, but so much for aesthetics :/

"the volume toggle, power/lock key, and silencing switch are all identical."

Ugh. In other words. Very very cheap. It would be wise if they change that for the actual production model. Though I have my doubts.

I'm not expecting the "pre-production" model to vary significantly from the ones sold in stores, based on what happened last year with BGR's Palm Pre and the Palm Pre that ended up at Sprint. BGR mentioned the phone feeling cheap and flimsy, but that's how the phone actually is.

Yeah, a bit disappointing on the build quality front. Though I gotta say I'm getting more and more excited about webOS 2.0. I can't wait to see the form factors they put it on come January.

This review has a side by side pic of the pre plus and the pre 2. Click to enlarge, it gives a good look at the keyboard: HP Palm Pre 2 and webOS 2.0 hands-on Live Photo Gallery Scroll down to the bottom. They also said the glass looks good in direct sunlight, like an ironman timex, tho I've never seen one of those in direct light.

Feel the same way all this pre production crap is kinda cheesy. Other than maybe some cosmetic changes I don't see them retooling the production line for any of the the hardware that will improve performance.

Could always ask Gizmodo to fish one out of a local bar. Turned out that iPhone was dead-on for the final product.

Is gorilla glass anything like the monster glass on the motorola i1? If so that was one of my wish list items. http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US...A-i1-US-EN.alt
