It's wrong to purchase what is known to be stolen goods with industry trade secrets rip the device apart and post an article with pictures online and never really try to get the device back to it's proper owner.

Sure it would get them a ton of press and get users excited but lets say the phone was usint a truly revolutionary design or tech in it, they would have just had all their cards show to all their competitors and could possibly face a truly killer hit in their stocks that could ruin them to the point of no recovery. Even if that didn't happen judging on how long it took old palm to get a device to market and how fast some of the other companies work by the time palm came out with what would have been an amazing device htc could already have a device out that took that idea and used it as their own hurting their sales tremendously.
not to mention that it is just unethical to purchase what you know to be stolen goods ( i know that it was never proven the device was stolen but it wasn't that guys property to sell in the first place).
You wouldn't bribe a judge for a better sentancing or try to sleep with your boss for a promotion they shouldn't buy their stories.
