    Greetings!

So as some background, I'm an O2 Guru and a long (loooooooong) time Palm OS user. I was so excited when Web OS was introduced but was so very disappointed that it didn't include voice dial, a keyboard shortcut and both devices have a small battery... for my previous career I needed these three tick boxes, well ticked.

Now I'm an O2 Guru and I have basically the pick of all of O2's handsets. I tried a Pre but the battery life was just... well... appalling. Dire. Recharge by lunch, even with lots and lots of stuff turned off. The Pixi is better, much better... but even so. As a device it just isn't quite there for me.

See... I love how Web OS works, I love the form factor (touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, no moving parts) and Touchstone is the icing on the cake. But over my first week, well the Pixi has been just a little inconsistent. The Pre walked through everything I threw at it with dozens of cards open and the Pixi struggles... I get this, but something I've been using has caused a memory leak. One reboot later and things are working much better... but... eeehh... *feels a bit let down*

At the moment I want to keep my Pixi as Palm builds it, so no Preware just yet...

I can see myself having a love / hate relationship with the Pixi Plus, in her delightful hot pink battery back cover. Is the trick just to reboot her every day or so..? Or is there a blacklist of applications known to have leaks?

if it meets your needs and you like using it, keep it. if you keep it, get preware and trick it out with homebrew goodness. you will be glad you did.

if your device is developing a problem. use webOSdoctor to get a fresh start. if issues continue, call your carrier and get a warranty replacement.

if you don't like using it or it doesn't do what you need, it's time to trade it for something else.

Well, yes, hehehe. The O2 Guru is combination team coach, retail technical specialist. I need to know how most stuff works as within the 100-odd Gurus in the organisation, somebody somewhere knows how that works.

So I work for the carrier...

you should put on unerkernel and govnah. that seems to help pixi owners even at stock clock speeds. it won't effect the "stock" aspect of the UI, but it will perform better. there is also a preware app that will automatically restart your phone at a scheduled time so you can wake up to a freshly rebooted phone.

I got the pixi cause I like the size, duribility, battery, and keyboard better. Also realized I close unused cards in webos anyhow.

At the moment I don't want to use Preware; not yet. I'll bear the tweaks in mind; I've already looked, but not touched so far...

And I have to say, running speed isn't too big of an issue, it's getting the "close cards" message when there's nothing else running. So one of my applications has a memory leak. FourSquare, Bad Kitty, Tweed, Facebook, Wapedia...

Just wait until the Warthog kernel gets to at least beta, then it would be stupid NOT to load Preware.

I don't understand why you don't want to use it now. Use Preware to get JStop to enable auto garbage collection. It will help until the kernel is refined.

The reason why I don't want to use it is because I want the full customer experience outta the box...

...looks at instructions. Wibble they look nasty.

And I agree, but it isn't going to happen with the device in your hands now.

    1. Enable developer mode, restart (upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart)
    2. Download webOS Quick Install
    3. Install Preware

I think the process is extremely easy, especially taking into consideration the return you get on it.

    Two words: WebOS 2.0

You will get it on your Pixi in a couple months, and it will be EPIC.

It will be like owning a new phone.

Palm UK | HP webOS 2.0 | Amazingly powerful. Surprisingly simple.

Okay so I have had a look at installing Preware and had a go, but my Pixi wasn't recognised. I will have another look later on.

The thing is that I want to know how the device behaves for the majority of customers, not for those geeky enough to want to and know how to hack it.

u have to be in developer mode. from the launcher type webos20090606 and tap the dev mode icon that it reveals.

It was in developer mode. It wasn't recognised. Probably another quirk of 64-bit Internet Explorer. But tonight, I'm done playing... and really I just wanna use the Pixi!

I think your Pre had a bad battery. I get 14 hours out of mine with everything turned on and heavy useage. I would suggest getting the Pre Plus. I worry that the Pixi wont handle future software updates as well--No Flash support in 2.0 is an example. I would especially get the Pre Plus over the Pixi Plus if you are wanting to have a phone that you can recommend to the majority of customers who will be using it Homebrew-free.

I tried three Pre Plus models and unfortunately all had the same appalling battery life and heat issue. Might have been a configuration issue, but swap in the Pixi Plus in place of the Pre Plus and it works so much better.

I have the Pixi Plus (Verizon) and I am happy with how its working for me. Got uberkernal, govnah and a few apps suggested by various posters. I am a novice with modifying the phone but the directions posted on these forums were good and I took the time to get everything done. It seems you can only possibly void the warranty with overclocking which is not possible on the Pixi Plus so I was comfortable installing govnah. Govnah seems to give the battery slightly longer life.
Occasionally it gets quirky, for example: the other night my son suddenly deleted his Facebook and on my phone his speed dial disappeared and he was linked with another one of my contacts. Very freaky. Also sometimes the screen gets hypersensitive and while I am talking to someone I can hear that things are opening because my cheek is touching the screen. But for the most part, I am happy with how it sync's my life through gmail (use it now in place of Outlook, which was hosing up my computer because I hate deleting emails). I have govnah running all the times, never had an issue. Had to return the Pixi Plus one time for a new one because the mute switch was broken and the phone would not get out of mute mode. They made the exchange with no problems. So there you have an opinion from a normal novice user. Many thanks to everyone on this site for posting easy to read instructions and opinions. For those of us who's phones are so important to us, it really has helped me juggle work, kids, and all the other things I have going on.
I wish it had voice dialing and I wish I could make the text default larger.

Well... the announcement that O2 won't bring Web OS 2.0 until the end of May 2011 has kinda forced my hand. I will use Web OS 2.0 as my primary device, but I can wait until June next year - meanwhile there are plenty of other handsets that I will need time with...

*sighs* I can't justify two handsets. I really can't. I'd love to, but I can't. Nor can I really afford two handsets as well...

I have the rumour announcement somewhere... but I can't find it right now. 28 May 2011 springs to mind.

I know everyone on here is saying the same thing but seriously, dont give up on preware. Once you get all that installed, you're pixi will be a whole different phone. I understand that you want to experience the phone as it was made. But when you are done with that.....Preware. And in regards to your computer not recognizing your phone, after putting it in Dev Mode and plugging it into your computer, you should choose the charge only option, not the usb mode.
