This is my 3rd or 4th replacement Sprint 650, first replacement was a new unit and subsequent were refurbs, all due to earphone jack problems. The current 650 came with the latest firmware installed and is hdwe rev B less than 2 months old. Yesterday, when I needed to make a call, there was no phone screen, it was in a continuous reset loop. I r&r the battery many times, same thing. I tried many hard resets and it would not erase the memory, keep getting the looping reset. I got on Palm's website and followed the directions for a zero out reset and that did not work either. I did that at least 10 times and it either goes back to the looping reset or get stuck on a RGB stripe color screen that says "bootloader v 0.24"

I went to my local Sprint store and left it for the Tech to check out. When I came back 2 hours later, I was told that I've had too many replacements and they will not give me another replacement. They asked if I have insurance and I said I do not. They said there is nothing they can do.
I told them the phone is under warranty and they insist there is nothing they can do.

I was very frustrated and asked to speak with the manager. They said she's gone for the day and to come back tomorrow. I asked for the assistant manager and she said I have to come back tomorrow and speak to the manager. I said I need a working phone before leaving the store since the phone is useless in it's current state. She said there is nothing she can do and that I have to contact Handspring, who does the warranty for the 650. Is that true? I told her that cannot be right and she said it's s a new policy that just came into effect. I said again in a louder voice that I need a working phone now. She told me to leave and come back tomorrow and if I do not leave, she will call the police to escort me out.

This is just unbelievable!!! I've wasted so much time getting replacement 650's , hard resets, updating firmware etc. A good estimate would be 60 to 100 hours wasted. I can see some people would just give up and find a different device. I love the 650 when it's working but if this keeps up I'll may be forced to go to the dark side.

So, do you guys have any good suggestions on what to do to get a working 650 ASAP? I will write a letter to Sprint about what happened at the store but that will take a while. I am going to a different store today in hopes they will be more professional and not give me the run around.

I'd love to see the list of apps you use, and if you've applied any hacks at all.

That's pretty incredible. It seems highly improbable that you'd get so many bad devices. What's the chance you're software is contributing to the problem?

    Just a thought.

I have no hacks. I have 9 megs free mem so that gives an indication how many apps I have. All the previous failures are hardware related, the earphone jack. Are you suggesting it is software that I've installed thatd caused the earphone jack to fail?

As far as the unrecoverable looping reset, I have not idea what caused it. If any installed software can cause a unrecoverable looping reset to the os, I must say it's got to be the crappiest OS in existence.

I went to another Spring store, after much haggling, the manager exchanged it for a refurb but said that this is the last replacement I will get from Sprint. I will have to either buy a repair and maintenance policy at $3/ mo from Sprint or go to Palm directly for warranty service. He said this is a new policy since the Sept 05 Sprint Nextel merger.

Anyone here get warranty service recently from Palm? If so, how did it go?

A company cannot abritrarily change a warranty policy retroactively. You should have received some sort of written warranty when you bought the phone. Read it carefully. If it has limitations on the number of replacement units then you are out of luck. If not then they have no choice but to honor the warranty as written.

If you can't find anything in the contract for them to use against you, mention to them that you will be reporting your experience to the state attorney general, whose job is to investigate and prosecute consumer fraud.

You've had 4 or 5 treos with bad earphone jacks? Can you describe the exact problem(s) you have had with them?

Sounds like maybe he plugs and unplugs the headset a lot, which the Treo hardware should completely handle, but doesn't unfortunately.

Maybe you can try a bluetooth headset if you use a headset that much? Cardo Scala 500 is $40 or so, works great.

Actually I'm not sure how many bad earphone jack 650's I've had. Didn't keep count. I think it was at least 2 and not more than 4. I dread going into a Sprint store since it is a waste of the better part of a day and then I have to go back to pick up the refurb. I use the earphone jack a lot while on the phone and listening to MP3', the jack stops working after a while. Usually it's the mic that stops working. I can hear them but they can't hear me.

Thanks for the advice. I'll read the warranty that came with the phone.

I got a voicemail (on my Sprint phone) from the police department yesterday. When I returned the call I learned that the Sprint store that called the police to escort me out gave them my cell phone number and filed a case with them that says I am not welcome in that store anymore. The police officer says a merchant has the right to do that and that I have to comply, otherwise I could be in trouble. I will be getting a copy of that report and will be writing a letter to Sprint corporate to file a complaint. Never have I been so insulted and mistreated by a place of business.

It's funny they told me to leave the store without a working phone and then gave the police my cell phone number.

Sounds like it's time for a good ole netwide Sprint smackdown. Tell your story on every forum you can find even closely related to phones.

In other words.. "Screw me? No... Screw YOU."
