I have been sitting on the slidelines with 3.1.4 which backups up fine except I can not seems to start the restore by inserting the SD card. I thought this used to work. Any suggestions?

Is 3.2.11 good enough to upgrade to?

That's how the old Palm Backup cards used to work, but I don't remember that ever being a feature of BBVFS.

Give it a try; if it backs up and restores properly for you, then you should keep it - it's much faster than 3.14, can do it's bit with the screen off and the checkpoints are finally sorted correctly. But hang on to 3.14...just in case.

Well, I just tried 3.2.11 and it seems SLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW compared to 3.1.4. I'm going back to 3.1.4.

And yes, the Hobo is STILL on crack!

p.s. it seems now that when you delete 3.2.11 from your Palm, it will also delete your registration key - so be careful - it's booby trapped!

The registration is in a file called PPur_Key_48.pdb

I save a copy of it on my SD card in a separate directory (along with my saved and unsaved preferences).

apra - thanks. i saw it in my archive folder with the 3.2.11 PRC and figured that was the registration key. i hate how Blue Nomad adds a "Utilities" category whether you want one or not every time you install.

the crack icon, unstable releases, deletion of registration key, and adding 'Utilities' is very annoying.

I have noticed that 3.2.10 and 3.2.11 seem to be much more stable in taking backups while background apps are running. I am also noticing that they aren't properly running my daily backups as scheduled.

Here's how I trouble shoot a seemingly missed scheduled backup:

    1. I check Preferences/Schedule to make sure that "Every day at:" is checked and that time is correct (ie, am vs pm)

    2. The "Last Backup" date/time on the Basic Screen and the date in the log aren't updated until a backup has finished; if a scheduled backup crashed, these dates wouldn't have been updated. The next step is to check the Advanced screen and scroll to the bottom of the files in the Restore list; if the last file in the list isn't the last file on your device (mine is ZLib), then your scheduled backup probably ran, but crashed before it was through.

    3. If step 2 indicates a crash during the scheduled backup, there are at least two possibilities to consider: BBVFS crashed because it encountered a file it couldn't handle, or it simply ran out of db cache. Initiate a backup using the current backup file and when finished, soft reset and backup again; if you're able to manually backup without problems, then the scheduled crash was probably due to insufficient db cache - otherwise, contact bluenomad support with a bug report indicating the problem file.

    4. There are at least two ways to increase the amount of db cache available for a scheduled backup: do not reset or delete your backup file, and schedule a soft reset before the scheduled backup runs. Creating a checkpoint resets (deletes) the backup file and increases the db cache used for a backup; after creating a checkpoint, run a manual backup so that the backup file isn't empty for the next backup. In addition, use ProfileCare or the combination of mReset/LookAtMe to schedule a soft reset 5 minutes or so before your scheduled backup.

Billy G - are you happy with the new version yet?

i don't want to do all your gymnastics just to do a backup.

I like 3.2.11's enhancements and fixes: fast backups, no turning on the screen to backup, proper sorting of checkpoints, etc. By understanding the conditions under which backups fail on my device - and then controlling for those conditions - I'm also able to dependably backup and restore my device.

So, I'm...OK...with 3.2.11; I've been using it now for a couple of days and it looks like I'll continue to use it until the next update: they've promised to fix 5way navigation on the checkpoints screen.

I've been sticking with BBVFS out of a mixture of loyalty (perhaps misplaced) and cheapness (I just don't want to buy another backup solution), but if you want dependable backups that don't require "gymnastics", it sounds like Resco Backup may be the solution for you.

i have loyalty to BBVFS too - i've been using it since 2001. but i'll stick with 3.1.4 until everything is resolved. BUT i'm very disappointed in Blue Nomad as of late.

FYI, I'm having the same problem with it not doing my scheduled backups now. I have my system set to reset and turn off the radio and then to do the BBVFS Pro backup and then about 15 mins later I also have BackUpMan do a scheduled back up, then another reset and radio on. Never had much problem before but now that I loaded the newer BBVFS Pro, then deleted and reverted to 3.2.2 it isn't doing the scheduled back up...and yes, I've triple checked that I have the right time set for each day
Well, it isn't perfect and it makes me crazy, but I still do love my Treo!

Refer to post #67, step 2: did it really not run at all, or did it crash during the process?

3.2.12 is out. I'm not sure which of the following was fixed in this release...still no 5way navigation on the checkpoint screens. Backup/Restore still work, at least.

    Version 3.2.6 - 3.2.12:

    * Added option: To help manage/optimize the memory cache on NVFS systems
    * Issue fixed: Auto-Backup after hotsync option problem
    * Issue fixed: Checkpoint order of display when deleting a saved checkpoint
    * Issue fixed: Restoring BT files on Treo650 after Bluetooth CarKit Update
    * Issue fixed: Treo 650 Backup Hanging when the phone is on
    * Issue fixed: Restore of too many files in advanced mode
    * Issue fixed: Slow Checkpoint sorting
    * Issue fixed: Zodiac device compatability issue

It didn't run at all as far as I can tell, since it still shows the prior manual backup I had done. Then to test things, I set the auto to a few minutes away and it backed up fine (at least appears to have done so). So, what gives? Like I said, I have things set so my radio auto shuts off and the phone resets a few minutes before BackUpBuddy is to kick in and then a few minutes later BackUpMan kicks in and after all is done the phone resets and radio is turned back on. Never had problems before and BackUpMan seems to be doing it's job fine. I also have MSafe, which locks my phone down after the reset, but that never caused an issue before.

Did you scroll to the bottom of the Restore list on the Advanced screen? The Log and Last Backup date aren't updated until after a backup has completed, but if you scroll to the bottom of the Restore list and the last file shown is not the last (alphabetically) on your Treo, then you know the backup didn't finish.

Yup. Looks like the last file (ZLauncher related files). I'm going to try a few things and see if I can isolate it, but it never had problems before.

Actually, since you've run at least one backup since the missed one, that doesn't tell you anything...but it might, if you check it the morning after the next scheduled backup is missed.

I forgot to check again this morning (when I had scheduled it to backup before the radio off, the reset and the Backupman backup) when I noticed it again didn't auto-back up. Instead I set it to try auto back up an hour after all of the rest is done (resets, radio back on, etc.) and that seemed to have worked this once. We'll see if it actually works as scheduled tomorrow morn though. It seems to do it only the first time I schedule it.
