    Hey,

I've been reading around and can't seem to find info on SD card capacities. My issue is this, I have a 1 GB Kingston Elite SD Card and after formatting it in my Treo 650 I add files from my computer through an onboard SD slot. I check the capacity and it says 973 MB which is cool. But, for some reason I can only add between 585 MB and 590 MB and then I cannot add anymore files. It says that the directory or file cannot be created. It's as if the card is full when it clearly isn't. The remaining space is around 385 MB. It's really weird. Anyone have a similar experience or advice? Thanks.

There's a limit to how many files you can have in the root directory...spread 'em around to other directories and you'll be fine.
    V > Vx > m505 > m515 > T/T > T3 > TC > 650 > 680

Hey thanks a lot Bill for your help. A minor oversight on my part, man I learn something new everyday. Take care.

    It's a limitation of FAT16.
    V > Vx > m505 > m515 > T/T > T3 > TC > 650 > 680

And note in the "limitation of FAT16" pointed to above, this bit..

"The root folder can manage a maximum of 512 entries. The use of long file names can significantly reduce the number of available entries."

I ran into the filename length limitation on my 512mb SD card because my .mp3/.ogg files have long filenames. Now I shorten the filenames when preparing .ogg files for my T600.

The marketing people for the chips always advertise the physical size of the chip but there is almost always an overhead cost of directory space required to make the chip work with the operating system . In this case the overhead is approximately 5.2% of the space of the chip (1024 - 973)/1024

On hard drives, the overhead can be as high as 20% of the hard drive space (it depends on the operating system and other paramters)
