I own a Treo 650. What exactly is the range of the bluetooth. I currently have a cheap bluetooth dongle I got on ebay and use Softick PPP to connect to my home broadband. All works fine, but as soon as I leave the room (about 3m away) it looses the connection.

If I purchase (for example) the Linksys USBBT100 (which claims a range of about 300 ft) - does this mean I can use my treo 300ft away from the computer that I plug the linksys into. Ie, will the few meters of the 650 range just meet the range of the linksys. Or do I still have be within a few meters away from the computer (does the treo have to be in range of the linksys unit, or just in range of the linksys 300 ft transmisson). Also, if I can be 50-300 odd feet away, will bluetooth work while I am downstars through floors and walls up the the 300foot range or will the range be shortened by walls etc.

Simply, my computer is upstairs. I want to be downstairs, out on the back patio about 40m away from the computer to connect to the internet like I can do in the room. If I plug the linksys in upstairs, will my palm work on the bluetooth network when I am on the patio. Or, because the palm only has a few meters range will it fail.

If not, will another type of bluetooth dongle work instead of the linksys or do I need another solution - any ideas please.

I hope I have made these question clear enough. I appreciate your assistance.

The 650 is Class 2. That means an opproximate range of 10M (without walls). Getting a Class 1 adapter will not help.

I appreciate your reply. It does not answer my question however (i was only using the linksys as an example - let pretend I get a class 2 unit then). On your point though, why then does palm on their own web site state the D-Link DBT-120 as a compatable adaptor for the 650. This D-Link unit is a class 1 unit also?
    Cheers

A search in the bluetooth forum will tell you all you need to know about the Linksys.
