I am working on a Palm Treo mail client called HeatMail that is designed to interact with HotMail (download, write, delete messages). It will work with all legacy hotmail accounts or with users who have upgraded to HotMail subscriptions. In other words, if you can successfully check your hotmail using Outlook/Outlook Express, you'll be able to use this client to access your hotmail account.

NOTE: This program does not connect to another server that in turn retrieves your messages from hotmail. It directly connects to hotmail's servers using the same technique that Outlook/Outlook Express uses.

I am reaching the point where it is ready for Beta (the next couple of weeks) and am interested in the following:

    1) Is this a program you would use/purchase?

    2) What features are you interested in seeing?

    3) Do you have a Treo 650/600 and are you interested in taking part in the Beta Testing Program.

Feel free to contact me at heatmailsupport@hotmail.com

    Thanks,
    Troy

The same as Outlook process is ok for me.

    3) Do you have a Treo 650/600 and are you interested in taking part in the Beta Testing Program.

    Yes

Will it work with MSN email that uses the Hotmail interface?
  4.    #4
Untested so far. I will put that on the list of things to test, but if it uses a similar interface, it should...

I'm interested too. I've been looking for this type of solution for a long time.

It seems like OneMail.ToGo already does this. I've never tried it though. http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fu...6&prodid=63067

OK, I see that OneMail.ToGo relies upon a third party server. So that is different that what you are doing.

If you need some help with the beta, I would be willing to assist you. Also, do you have a site set up yet? I could help you with that, too if you want.

I'd love to beta your program. Direct connect to hotmail sounds great and would be wort a small fee. I have a 650. I have a slightly different db of contacts in hotmail than in outlook so it would be nice if it could connect to that as well.

HeatMail is now ready for Beta 1. I only need a couple of Beta testers and will be contacting them shortly. I expect the Beta period to be a couple of weeks maximum. The first release of HeatMail will include the following functionality:

-Get message headers (for quick mail check).
-Get message bodies for messages that only have downloaded message headers.
-Get messages and their message bodies.
    -Write new messages.
-Delete messages (locally and/or on server).
-Select messages to perform above actions on them.
-Use the Treo 650 HTML Renderer (sans pictures) to view message bodies.
-Use a simple text parser to view message bodies.
-Choose two different size fonts for message viewing.
-Choice to automatically remove messages locally if they were deleted on the server.
-Automatically update every messages read status when getting mail.

I'd like to get feedback on prioritizing the following new functionality. What is most important to you, and in what order?

    -Read/Unread status:
    1) In preferences choose whether read status priority is on server or handheld. (when you get new messages, the read status will be changed based on priority).
    2) Add option to mark messages read/unread.
-add message reply and forward option.
-add support for using the Treo's address book or hotmail's address book.
-add HTML Render picture support (download pictures along with html messages.
-create a HeattMail conduit so it syncns hotmail messages when you synch with the computer.
    -add multiple account support (pop).

Your feedback is appreciated. It will help me to layout a prioritized plan for adding these options.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks,
    Troy

    For me priority will be:
    1. add message reply and forward option.
    2. add HTML Render picture support (download pictures along with html messages.
    3. Add option to mark messages read/unread.
    4. add support for using the Treo's address book or hotmail's address book.
    5. In preferences choose whether read status priority is on server or handheld. (when you get new messages, the read status will be changed based on priority).
    6. add multiple account support (pop).
    7. create a HeattMail conduit so it syncns hotmail messages when you synch with the computer.

(I don't think spending time on creating a conduit is worth. Most PDAs and smartphones nowadays have some type of wireless media)

    Thanks,

    Al

I installed the Beta 0.8 today and have been unsuccessful in connecting to my email. It tries for a long time (3-5 minutes), saying Login:Receiving. Finally it errors out saying Error: Failed Connection

It appears the login process is different depending on where you log in from (i.e., what state you are in). I am going to work on getting it so we can see the output from the login process. That way, you can try it from your Treo and send me the response.

I'll let you know when I have this worked out (Might take a day or two).

    Thanks,
    Troy

I've ironed out a bunch of the stability issues. They were related to differences in how carriers communicate on the internet. I will be extending the beta to additional users, so please let me know again if you are still interested. Contact me at heatmailsupport@hotmail.com.

    Thanks,

    Hello everyone!

We are getting closer to the formal release of HeatMail (Hotmail Treo 650 Mail Client). I wanted to open up access to the HeatMail trial to those who are interested in testing the application out. I've attached the latest version and am very intereseted in getting feedback from you. Please feel free to comment on features and usability as well as any bugs you find. If you find a bug, please be as detailed as possible about how you found the bug and exactly what happens (or doesn't happen) that leads you to believe it is a bug. Send all emails/requests to heatmailsupport@hotmail.com.

I look forward to hearing from you.

NOTE: If you've already installed HeatMail as part of a previous Beta, please uninstall the old version first. Also, remember that HeatMail is designed to be used only with legacy Hotmail accounts. The rule of thumb is that if you can access your Hotmail account through Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express, than you should be able to access it through HeatMail.

Thanks again for all of your help. Your input has given me the support necessary to make HeatMail successful.

    -Troy

    ---------------------------

    New features in version 0.8.9:

-Added support for a msg screen font. Now you can select different fonts for the msg screen and the main screen.

-Added preference to shutdown data connection on heatmail exit.

-Added new msg preference screen (some preferences were moved from general preferences to msg preferences).

-Added preference to mark a message read after reading it.

-Added preference to specify max message size to download.

-Added preference to download messages that have been received in the past x days.

-Updated help screens to reflect preference changes.

-Added button in message screens to delete current message.

-Added button in message screens for messages with bodies not yet downloaded. The button allows you to download that message.

-Implemented basic 5way support for the main screen. You can now highlight messages and press left on the 5way to select them.

-Fixed issues with viewing msgs in html/text (decoding quoted printable)

-Added clock, signal bar, battery meter to the top of the main screen and signal bar and battery meter to the top of writemail and msg screens.

-Improved error checking during network connections.

-Improved graphics in progress window and on the main screen.

UPDATE: Attachment Removed because a new one exists later in the thread.

    Everyone,

Please test out sending emails and let me know if they are not arriving. Try sending new messages and forwarding existing ones. Keep in mind that Hotmail sometimes delays the message. I've experienced occasions where the email arrives 1 hour later.

Can you let me know if you are successful and/or unsucessful so I can gauge how big the issue is?

    Thanks,
    Troy

Could you add support for MSN? I tried to set up HeatMail, but it only gives the option of @hotmail.com Thanks

    Peter,
You are the second one to make such a request. I will investigate this further and let you know. In the meantime, do me a favor and try using heatmail, but specify your full email address in the username field (username@msn.com). There is a small chance that it might work.

    Thanks,
    Troy
