I've run into a strange problem, and had it happen on my 600 before as well.

enter a name into outlook contacts. Add that contact as a speed dial using lookup. Go to dial a number from that speed dial (alternate number using space key) and the number differs from what's in the contact.

Noticed this has happend when a contact # has changed since first adding as a favorite (new cell, etc), and it appears the favorites button retains old info, despite changes in the contact field.

even deleting contact from both 650 and outlook and re-adding after a synch doesn't help.

Extremely frustrating issue. Anyone else run in to this?

Stranger still. If I set up my wife's home number as the favorite/speed dial, the mobile shows up as an incorrect number (one not listed anywhere in the contacts fields) when navigating the speed dial via the space bar.

If I set up the favorite/speed dial to her mobile number, it pops up correctly in the favorite button.

Same issue with my Mom's number when added as a favorite. The favorite button shows a work number for her and not her mobile. She no longer has any work number associated with her Outlook contact info.

    Phantom data -- very strange.

As for the favourites button not staying updated, I think that's normal. The phone app grabs the data from contacts when you set it up (all number fields), and that is that. At least in my experience.

As for phantom numbers showing up in alt-spacebar, that is wierd. What other apps are you running that might utilize contacts data?

    None that I'm aware of.

Since I had updated from a 600, would that have played a part? Perhaps importing all the "old" info I had in previous favorites?

The strange thing is that I can delete the favorites and the contact records both. Do a synch. then add teh contact info back to outlook, synch again and add a new favorite with the *new* contact info and the same issue occurs: old data propagates

If you just synced everything from your 600 to your 650, this won't be the only problem you run into; you should start clean.

Rename your backup directory, hard reset the 650 and hotsync; that'll load your PIM data but none of your old software or 600-specific files. Then, only install 650-compatible software...and set up your favorites manually.

I didn't think I synced anything from my 600 -- during initial install, I thought there was a prompt asking about that, and I selected not to move over any apps.

Or was that not what you meant?

That process probably should have taken care of things, but if you suspect that it didn't work - which is what I understood you meant when you said, "Since I had updated from a 600, would that have played a part? Perhaps importing all the "old" info I had in previous favorites?" - I would advise following the process I outlined.

    OK that didn't work.

Did hard reset. I also not only renamed my old backup, I moved it to the desktop (as well as my old 600 photos in a renamed folder), then uninstalled the entire Handspring suite using the handspring uninstall tool, and deleted all remaining handspring info by deleting the Handspring file folder from my PC.

I then installed the new Palm software that came with the Treo 650, synched info and still get the same error when adding my wife to a favorite button. Old data pops up for her mobile. I can't see this info anywhere within the Outlook record, but somehow the device must be pulling this info.

When I first installed the new Palm software, I was asked to set up a username and it did a short sync (it looked like network/carrier files and such IIRC), then forced a PC reboot, then came back after reboot and asked me to select from Outlook or PDesktop. It then popped up a message that "some programs aren't compatible with OS5 and will be moved to special folder," as well as asking me if I wanted to install apps or just PIM info. I chose the latter. Following that it did full sync with Outlook.

    Any other ideas?

(I found it strange that it found incompatible applications, as it was a clean install from the Cd,and as I said, the only apps on the device at that time were the ones put there during the installation's firts, shorter, sync. The apps in that folder include ConnectionMgr50DB, HSTraceDatabase, NetworkDB, Graffiti_ShortCuts and MIDI_Ring_Tones)

Well, I'm glad I did the fresh install anyway (and will do the same procedure on my work PC Monday) as it freed up some memory.

I also figured out the issue...if there is a shared number between contacts, the favorites app. defaults to pulling info from the first (meaning alphabetical) contact with that shared number.

Specifically, I saw two errors. The first was for my wife, whose name starts with M. A few months back I had read about this idea to set up a contact named "ICE" on your mobile phone for "In Case of Emergency" -- trying to establish it as a standard for emergency personnel to look at someone's phone (see here )

Well, the contact named ICE had the same home number as listed under my wife's contact info, but I was one digit off of her cell when entering it under the ICE contact name. Even though I select from my wife's contact when setting up a favorite, it actually defaulted to the number data listed under the earlier contact name that shared a number.

Case #2: old cell phone number and work nubmer popping up for my Mom when neither were in her outlook contact info. Turns out I had both a "Dad L" and a "Mom L" records. His record wasn't up to date, so, even though I added from lookup her info, his was popping up because they shared a common home number and his name comes first alphabetically.

Strange bug...and the figuring out the issue was pure luck (there's a similar issue over at the Palm forums)
