Just upgraded from my old Treo 600 (AT&T model, wouldn't work well in my new city because it couldn't connect to the more abundant Cingular towers) to a Cingular-branded Treo 650 with the new 1.15 update and 01.31 firmware. I searched the forum for answers to these questions, but came up blank. Sorry to start a thread with such a wide variety of topics!

    1. My Treo spontaneously powers up several times per hour just sitting on my desk. The screen will turn on, and since the keyguard feature is enabled, it turns off after a few seconds. There is not an alarm or other alert waking it, and no sound plays -- it's as if someone turned it on. (An invisible hand, if you will.) Is this a software issue? Third-party apps I've installed are Vindigo 2.75.1.2, Documents To Go 7.006, Bapsoft Deluxe Solitaire 1.8, MegaClock 2.1, MunduIM 2.4, and Scrabble 1.2.

    2. Most HotSyncs crash midway through, while my Entourage 2004 conduit is trying to sync via either the cable or Bluetooth. Have any Mac users seen this symptom? Yup, I upgraded to the version of Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager included on the CD. I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.2.

    3. While we're on the Mac topic, has anyone used The Missing Sync with any success? I'm reluctant to add another piece of software to the mix, since my needs are relatively straightforward, but if it works, it works.

    4. I was disappointed to see how different the integration between To Do items and Calendar items is than it was on the 600. Is there no way to get my trusty "Tasks/Floating events/Timed events" view all on one clean page? Come to think of it, it looks like floating events no longer exist....

    5. Even with the auto-power-off function set at 3 minutes, occasionally I'll be sending an e-mail with an attachment that takes longer than the timeout. Each time I'm in the middle of sending when the device powers off, the attachment is corrupted or the e-mail is unsent. The device is unresponsive, so there's no way to restart the timeout by hitting keys. Surely the device should recognize that it's in the midst of a network operation and not shut itself off? Is this a known issue?

Thanks in advance for any help. The screen alone is such a relief after my year and a half with the 600 that I'm not complaining, just hoping these issues can be resolved!

How did you upgrade? If you just hot synced your 650 to your 600's userid, we need to start over. The 650 chokes on prior software settings being brought forward in this manner. See my creating a clean Treo instructions in the attached thread:

(Start with what Jeff said below FIRST)

The Treo 600 was from Handspring and came this a light version of dtbk3 as it's calendar. The 650 came wPalm's calendar function. If you liked the 600's calendar, go for the dtbk5 program.

    Cheers, Perry

Several of your issues are related to the SIM Tray problem.

    1) Take your SIM tray out of the Treo.
    2) Then take SIM card out of the SIM tray
    3) Put 3 layers of scotch tape on the back of the SIM *card*
    4) Trim tape to fit
    5) Put SIM card back into the SIM tray
    6) Put the SIM tray back into the Treo

See if the problem goes away.

The datebook on your old Treo was really a version of Datebk3; the true successor to your old datebook is not the Treo 650's Calendar, but Datebk5...

    Thanks, everyone, for your replies!

I had already renamed the Backup folder and installed my third-party apps from scratch, so none of my old settings were carried over.

Fortunately I already have the new, redesigned SIM card in my Treo. My problem wasn't the phone/radio turning off spontaneously, but rather the screen turning on spontaneously -- which admittedly isn't as serious, since I can still receive calls. The turning-on problem seemed to get better this morning, but the respite was short-lived. It now turns itself on every few minutes again as before. What's worse, it stays on for up to a full minute while the keyguard message is up.

That's great news about Datebk5! Many thanks for pointing it out. Do I understand from their Web site that it would continue to sync with Entourage, since it uses exactly the same db info that Calendar does? And that data entered in Calendar would appear in the Datebk5, and vice versa? That'd be sweet.

My chief ongoing issue is the HotSync crashes. Oddly, it is seemingly random which conduit on the Treo is actively syncing when the crash occurs. For example, I went into the Entourage 2004 conduit settings on my Mac and completely disabled the "Tasks" portion since that was where it was balking -- but on the next sync it was the "Contacts" conduit that crashed. Very frustrating.

Maybe I'll spring for The Missing Sync: then at least I'll have a company I can ask for support if the HotSync crashes continue. If anyone here has used it, I'd be grateful for a report! (Just found the Mac OS X folder ... I'll repost the Mac-specific problems there.)

    You understand correctly, Sir.

Things seem to have gone from bad to worse. Now button presses aren't recognized, and I can't turn the phone on and off by holding the power button. I also noticed this morning that half my battery power had drained overnight. (I thought standby time was supposed to be a week or more?)

Are these problems indicative of a hardware fault? I know how hard it can be to get devices like this replaced, since they always assume it's operator error, but resetting the device doesn't solve the problem for long, and I haven't installed anything particularly baroque.

Very frustrating after the great experience I had with my Treo 600. :^<

Swapped my 650 for a new unit, and some of the problems vanished! Unfortunately the most vexing two remained.

    1. The unit turns itself on seemingly at random and stays on for 30 seconds with the keyguard message up. Shouldn't the keyguard feature turn off the screen after only 5 or so seconds? It'd be only a minor annoyance, except that it runs the battery out very quickly. Since both of the units I've had display this behavior, I suppose it's a software issue. Bluetooth is off, so it's not that. Haven't installed any hacks or updates, since it came with the latest firmware/software. Anyone else seen this issue, I hope?

    2. HotSyncs still weren't working, but I did find a (suboptimal) workaround: setting Tasks to sync only one way (Treo -> Entourage) allows the sync to proceed reliably. So the unexpected power ons are, I suppose, my only remaining issue.

But while I'm here, what's the deal with the "Prefs -> Power" settings being utterly ignored? Even on a fresh machine out of the box, the unit would auto-power-off after 30 seconds, even when 3 minutes was set in the prefs. Is this a Cingular issue? I thought Cingular's power-off only applied during active calls?

(O.K., one last question, lol ... why doesn't the call log list the call time, the way my Treo 600's log did?)

I have a "new" unlocked 650 GSM from eBay. All is OK except after I finish Hot Synching the reset gets into an endless loop. I think this backup folder replacement could work but I cannot see how to access this. Is it through the Pocket Mirror or Palm Desktop?
    Thanks
