I've finally figured out how to reset my Treo 650 (from many, but not all freezes) without removing the Treo's battery cover. You can reset your Treo 650 with just an SD card. Here's how:

The SD card needs two programs on it:

    1. mreset (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/mreset.shtml)

    2. startup (http://palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseac...&prodID=105008)

Mreset is a free program that reboots your Treo. Startup is a $2 program, available at PalmGear, which will let you run any program automatically when you put that SD card in your Treo 650.

Copy both programs to the /Palm/Launcher folder. (Don't use the Palm installer.) Set startup to launch mreset automatically. Then all you need to do is pop in that SD card and chances are very high that your Treo 650 will reboot. Best I can tell, startup does not work in the demo mode, so you have to sacrifice $2 to test this on your own Treo 650.

I use SoftReset....doesn't work if you're frozen, but for most anything else it works just fine. I've gotten into the routine of doing a soft boot every morning just to start the day with fresh memory.

I highly recommend AkUtils. It can be used to soft reset if you can get to your DA launcher (i.e., the Treo isn't completely locked). In addition, it has icons for power off, brightness control, and locking. And it displays date, time, battery voltage and %, RAM free, and SD space free. All without leaving the app you're in.

... Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out.

I don't have ZLauncher and I'm not familiar with that program's features. (Though I've read great things about ZLauncher.) I was looking for a solution that would let me reset my Treo when the keyboard and touchscreen became unresponsive or extremely sluggish (without having to remove the battery cover), just by inserting an SD card.

I use VolumnCare, which I programmed as a quick key.

Trouble is, when the system is hung, quick key or not makes no difference.

I suppose with this StartUp/MReset pair, whether SD insertion wakes it up to run depends on how "hung" it is. Have you tried this during "regular weak signal hanging"?

Most of the time when my Treo 650 freezes, it's actually become incredibly slow to respond. What would take 1/2 second, takes 20 seconds. I haven't tried the SD card/startup/mreset combination with all kinds of freezes yet.

I was going to reedit, but a note already followed. I use VolumeCare's soft reset.

Bill, thanks in advance for sharing your experience. Let us know how it react when it "hung". I just may look for my old retired 8meg SD card just for that.

All good suggestions. The freezing up or sssllloooowww movement of the Treo at times is extremely frustrating. In case you haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere in the forums, Seidio is releasing a battery cover - color matched for both CDMA and GSM models - within the next week or so that will have have (gasp!)a built-in (or built-out, depending on your orientation) hole. Insert your stylus in at 90 degrees and presto! We are also in the process of developing a skin/belt clip combo that should satisfy users more than the current crop has. We're ALSO developing a skin that has a hole preformed to match up with the one in the battery cover. Don't know how long the other products will take to finish developing, but the battery cover is waiting on exact paint match ups so that it looks as seamless as the cover that comes with the Treo.

Thanks, Seido. I've been wondering when someone would come up with this.

No need to take off the battery cover... I just let my palm sit overnight, and when I hit the red power button, voila! It resets itself with the HALRadioAcDc.c Line 441 error!

I'm pretty sure that the HALRadio error indicates a hardware problem.

I have to say that D. Siefert's (sp) Crash program has worked well for me. I've had it on the 650 since around January. I've opened the battery cover maybe twice since then to reset. Don't know if "auto" resets after loading Crash were the result of the 650 finally resetting on its own or Crash doing it for me. Don't even know what my battery looks like any more!!!

You can assign mreset to the side button... so you can reset just keeping the button pushed.

besides every night after the scheduled backup (at 4.03), Profiles is instructed to switch to silent mode (at 4.58) then mobile clock (former Bob alarm) has an alert to launch mreset (at 5.00) the phone reboots and it doesn't wake me up with the phone turning on sound, in the end profiles switches my profile back to what it was before (at 5.03).

Every morning I start with backup made and a fresh treo ready for work.
