I will probably buy a Treo 650 pretty soon, but I am worried about the firmware upgrades only being avilable for unlocked or unbranded Treos.

The phone I will be buying is SIM locked to the Swedish network Telia. But as far as I know (and I'm nearly 100% sure) there are no special software modifications made by Telia and the phone's front says "PalmOne Treo 650" not "Telia Treo 650" or something. It is only locked so I must use a Telia SIM in it. Does it still count as a locked Treo because of the SIM lock or could it be considered an unlocked phone because it isn't branded (like they do with Sprint, Verzion etc.)?

On the sixth row of the table on this support page it says I can use the generic Treo updater for "Unlocked GSM or Other Service Providers". As I don't have the phone yet I can't find out which software version it has, but I HIGHLY doubt Telia has a special software version.

So do you think I will be able to upgrade it when/if I get it?

sounds like an unlocked treo to me. Did they subsidize it? Are you SURE there is a sim lock?

Yes, they have subsidized it and the information page says it is locked to that specific network. But as I say, no other signs of any "branding".

Generally, lock refer to subsidiary lock - your phone is locked to that carrier's SIM. So, if you get another SIM, say from China Mobile, you can't use it and you are stuck using your carrier. In your case, Telia. You can pick up a regular sim or "pay-as-you-go" SIM elsewhere but you can't use it.

SIM lock however refers to something different. Lock the sim so others cannot use it (my secret phone numbers are safe).

What you described is an UnBranded but LOCKed phone.

You can unbranded the phone with software/fw reload. To unlock the phone, you need the unlock code or to use those unlocking services.

When you get your Treo, launch the phone app and press menu + I: if your phone's software version ends in "ROW" (Rest of World), you can apply the "unlocked" upgrades.

As clearly stated in the OP, he doesn't have the phone yet, however it should be a ROW GSM based on the info he provided. There should be no problem upgrading fw on it, heck, you can even upgrade fw on a Cingular phone to a ROW fw, so I don't see why he won't be able to in this case.

So if it is ROW it doesn't matter that it is actually locked to a specific network? That sounds great!

    Factory unlocked/unbranded GSM 650 - Tmobile; FW: 1.71; SW: 1.20-ENA; Carrier DB: 255; HW: A

If I'm repeating what someone has already said look at how long the thread is and ask yourself if you really expect me to read the whole thing.

Thanks, but that thread didn't really deal with my questions:
What does Palm mean with 'locked'. Is it the same as branded for them? Because on their site they only have two options, either the phone is unlocked or it is a branded phone.

I believe the phone I will buy is a network locked, UNbranded one. Can it be upgraded?

Hopefully I got the answer earlier this thread, but it would sure be nice to have another opinion too.

Can you buy network locked Treos in the USA that aren't branded?

I just wanted to end this thread. I got the Treo yesterday and the software version was 1.06-ROW. I ran the Unlocked GMS Updater and all went well. I now have 1.13-ROW.

Launch the phone app (green button) and press menu + I. You'll see software version at the bottom.

Grattis till Treon! Where did you buy and what did you pay for it?
