When I hotsync, even when not adding new application, my treo automatically does a soft reset. Why?

Look the end of your most recent Hotsync log: do you see a series of files being installed instead of backed up?

If so, then your Backup conduit is incorrectly set: right click on the Hotsync Manager icon in your program tray, choose Custom and change the DEFAULT action of the Backup conduit to " Handheld overwrites desktop".

Bill, thank you for the suggestion - changing the worked for me system setting to "handheld overwrites desktop" solved my reset hostsync issue thanks

I am having this problem, except I am not seeing what you described in the log. If I press the button on my cable, I get a soft reset. I was able to get it to synch by going into the hotsynch app on the handheld and manually starting it that way.

After that, I did a hard reset. It synched fine with the button. Once my data was restored, I tried again, and always get a soft reset unless the hotsynch is initiated through the touchscreen (and not the button on my OEM cable).

I have only tried this at home--problem just started tonight. So not sure if it will do the same with my cradle at the office.

I've been thinking my contacts are going--have been getting USB device errors in both locations and having problems establishing a connection. Now I wonder if something is corrupted on the device?

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

The fact that it works after a hard reset, but not after you've restored your data, tells you that the problem is being caused by at least one of your 3rd party apps.

Rename your desktop /Palm/<username>/Backup directory, hard reset and hotsync. That'll load your PIM data but none of your apps; then load back one or two apps at a time until the problem app presents itself.

The weird thing is, nothing is new. I have not installed anything since I left on a trip. Synched before I left and it was fine.
