I'd like to start a new thread that focuses on just the results and opinions of those who have upgraded to 1.43 since the other thread seems to have more about obtaining various versions of the 1.14 ROM.

I have not yet upgraded, but will most likely do so today or tomorrow.

Please indicate if you just installed the F/W or a flavor of 1.14, as well as what you upgraded from.

Some things I have picked out of the previous thread are:

    1. Improvements to DTMF tones
    2. Some improvement to dbcache
    3. Few resests and freezes
    4. Overall performance increase of loading the phone application

    I moved from 1.31/1.13 on my P1 unlocked T650 to 1.43/1.14.

I agree with all of the above, but I'd say "some improvement to db cache" is understating it - it's huge...really much more efficient. Number 3 is a direct result of this.

In addition to the 4 items you listed, there is an increase in volume for both the handset and backspeaker, as well as an increase in mic sensitivity...so much so that one has to turn down handset speaker volume or the party on the other end hears an echo each time they speak.

I have experienced a slight improvement in speaker volume, but it sounds (no pun intended) like everyone else if getting a lot more volume...

I guess I didn't put it very clearly, but my point wasn't that the handset speaker is tremendously loud, but that the mic is almost too sensitive.

For those commenting on speaker/mic volume, please indicate if you previously used VC or not and if you are still using it. When people say "it got louder" it would be nice to know what their baseline was. Also for those who have an echo, it might be because you are still running VC which is now creating too much volume with the update.

    Thanks.

If I'm repeating what someone has already said look at how long the thread is and ask yourself if you really expect me to read the whole thing.

I'm a VC owner, but haven't been using it for the last couple of days after installing 1.43/1.14dbg. Handset volume isn't as loud as it was using VC's full boost/volume, but it is as loud as the setting I actually used. The mic is very sensitive now - again, I'm not using VC currently - and causes echo for the other party unless I lessen the volume of the handset. I might start using VC again just for turning down the mic sensitivity.

It does NOT fix the 30 second bug. I use StopDim for that still.

I used to use VolumeCare as well but I have deleted it now that I upgraded to fw 1.43. The volume is now so loud at the top end that I set it a click or too below max. I do not have the echo issue others are having.

where is this 1.41 firmware? I see some people posting about it but don't know where it get it. I upgraded my firmware to 1.43, and everything is fine. I will find out soon if it improves the gsm freezing problem, since I experience this often as I go in and out of the PATH tunnel in NYC.

I have an unlocked GSM Cingular phone with 1.13ROW and 1.43. Are there any reasons to upgrade to 1.14?

I thought that was only a "feature" in the Cingular ROM.

The main reason that I'm glad I moved from 1.13 to 1.14 is the improvement in db cache. I've been interested in how db cache was handled, so I've developed a bit of a compulsion about constantly checking it with DBCacheDA.

With 1.13, I could see available db cache decreasing steadily, often in big chunks, as I moved in and out of certain apps (Blazer, DateBk5, PalmInternals, etc), forcing manual clearings of the cache and/or two or three preventive soft resets a day.

With 1.14, db cache still decreases, but at a much, much slower rate. The system now clears the cache so efficiently now that often my available cache after leaving the app is not very different than it was before I launched it. It seems that I'm down to 1 or no preventative resets a day.

The 30 second "feature" introduced the 30 second bug on Cingular.

The feature was to dim the screen after 30 seconds on a call in order to save battery life. That was fine; unfortunately, when it did that it would also change your pre-set preference as to how long you wanted the treo to wait to turn off. (you know, in preferences you can choose 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, or 3 minutes of inactivity for auto-off). It did not matter if you had it preset at 3 minutes, the "bug" would shut off the unit in 30 seconds regardless. That's the story of the 30 second bug on Cingular.

Back to the thread topic, fw ver. 1.43 has proven to be very stable on my Cingular Treo 650.

I don't have this bug in my Cingluar treo 650, no matter ROM1.13 or ROM1.14. I set auto-off 1 min and it always goes off in one minute.

    Jeff

The rom has been stripped down so its not from them. However the original and the firmware is. Who can possibly have the programming code to the Treo 650 OS other than Palm?

When the upgrade to Firmware 1.31 came out, Palm said that it wasn't from them. I just replied that I got it from their latest Cingular update and they didn't reply back anymore. They disown it as it was used for another purpose they didn't intend. That may be the case with 1.43/1.14dbg ending up with end users here in TC.

One source informed me 2 weeks ago to be patient as there will be an upgrade for the Treo 650 soon. I asked about this when I got to speak with Palm Tech support. He just repeatedly answered "Im not allowed to disclose that information." However he didn't even deny it.

Most Palm NVFS devices are now at garnet 5.4.8 Its not remote Palm does release an update to fix or alleviate present problems with its flagship device.

As for me, I've downgraded to 1.43/1.13 already since

    1. Blazer 4.2 had problems (reset)when max dbcache was at 1200 or lower. It also forces a dbcache clearing when max < 2000 that causes a reset especially if the site visited is huge. (treonauts with images). I also couldn't connect to some sites using my custom proxy when in the past I could. I did try customizing it with 4.0 but that just won't work with garnet 5.4.8

    2. Prolonged white screen after the grayscale Palm appears upon doing a manual reset. This however doesn't happen with a reset that occured due to a system problem.

    3. Connecting to my service provider upon turning the radio on is considerably longer with 1.14dbg. Having my radio turned off via ProfileCare (first instance for the day) cause the shutdown screen to be displayed for a minute.

Going back to 1.43/1.13 fixes all of these.
