could you please tell me why copying a record to the address book on the treo 650 using dir assist takes about a minute....the treo 600 used to do it in 10 seconds if that long...is there an update that could fix this?
    thanks

Copying a record to the Contacts list takes just a second or two on my Treo 650, using DA v3.20.

Does your T650 run slowly in general? If so, you might want to look through this thread.

How did you upgrade from the 600 to your 650? If you just hotsynced everthing from one to the other, this DA episode could be the least of your problems.

It's probably some sort of software conflict. If it really bothers you, hard reset your Treo 650, rename your backup directory, HotSync and then install DA. I'll bet that the copy function works correctly then; your next step would be a process of trial and error to find the original app or apps that caused the problem.

I've had the same problem with DA. Not sure what the problem is.

by the by - this same lag also applies to Handmark Express - if I had to guess, it's due to the new core PIM app structure, and the fact that DA and Express probably have to do some kind of protocol conversion to write to the new PIM apps. I don't really know what I'm talking about, though, so I could be totally wrong.

If that were true, all Treo 650 users would be experiencing this problem with DA...and I don't

Good point Nrosser. TreoGuy, do you use a 3rd pary PIM replacement?

Folks, what causes this (on any app that has the problem) is that on the 650 there are 2 different sets of PIM database files. The new one for this situation is called ContactsDB and has new fields. To maintain backward compatability there are also old ones (AddressDB, etc) and if you access the old files (say to add a record like DA does) what the OS does is copy the ENTIRE DB from the new file into the old one before your API call can do its thing. Then once you close the legacy DB the OS nukes all the records again (to save space). So, those of us that have small contacts lists don't see a delay (or a short one) but those of you having large delays have large contacts databases and it's taking a while to do all this shuffling. I suppose in the worst case if you are low on free RAM it would fail altogether.

I am planning a bug fix release soon and this is one of the main items I will address, change to using the new ContactsDB.

OK, that makes sense. I've only got about 750 contacts in my database; I'm guessing that people that experience a slowdown have 3 or 4 times that in theirs.
