I ran back-up buddy, got a reset (PBackup.cpp, Line:288, unable to properly read compressed record), and after the reset, ALL preference files seem to have disappeared, programs lost registration codes, etc. I know, this is a common happening but here is what THIS bonehead did, without thinking, I did a sync right afterward, thinking it might "fix" the problem. So, I have killed my ability to hard reset, then sync to get back my prefs, right?

So my question, is there any way to go "back in time" to the sync before last??????? I already tried a hard reset, then ran backup buddy, and that didn't bring them back.

    So, am I SOL??

Try looking in your PalmOne/'Username'/Archives folder and see if you can retrieve your saved preferences from there and re-install to your Treo.

You're talking about BackupBuddy for Windows, right? Not BackupBuddyVFS? If your only backup is the one on your desktop generated during Hotsync, and you don't periodically copy your backup folder to another location, then, yes, you have lost your good Saved_Preferences file.

Sounds like it. How many days worth of backups do you keep? I myself keep 2 days worth just for problems like this. I ask because if you have previous days you could just that one's "Saved Preferences".

P.S. How did you fare during the storm, I was thinking about you and your center.

Storm didn't touch us, NRG, not even a drop a rain, but omg, NO is a mess. We got tens of thousands of evacuees, the hospital ERs have been nuts, hospital census off the scale, etc. Really, really, sad.

How do you "keep" a prior backup? I just sync it.

Bill, I mean backupbuddyvfs. It is the one that cause the crash in the first place. And no I don't copy my backup to another location perioldically. Guess I answered my own question. Guess once I get everything up and running I will be saving a copy once a week or so.

Will look in the archives folder when I get home. I believe, though, that that folder just holds actual programs that you have deleted. The pref files, I am afeared, just get overwritten?????

    thanks for y'alls input.

If you are using Back Up Buddy VFS then your back up should be on your SD card and un-effected by a hot-sync.

That was what I thought. I suppose that since the crash occurred while I was running the program, maybe that is why the backup using bubvfs didn't work.

Never fails, though, after MONTHS, I had my 650 filled to the brim with wonderful apps, all tweaked to perfection, working flawlessly...... Alas, all is now lost. So sad. Think I'll go cry now....

Was it the first time you tried to do a back up?
  10.    #10
No, I had done 8 or 10, I suppose. First time it ever crashed during the backup

Then there really isn't any reason one of your old back ups wouldn't be on your card.

Just restore the Saved Preferences file from BBVFS; you'll be fine.

Interesting. Since I did a backup with bub after a hard reset, I go to the bub log, there is nothing there. It now says it has never been backed up. Under "checkpoints", there is nothing there as well.

Yeah.. Make sure you use Checkpoints with BBVFS. Restore an old Saved Prefs files from an older backup.

Guess what. I never used the checkpoints. So I don't have an older backup.

    ok, first:
saved prefs is in your archive folder.
second, go in BBVFS and go into advanced menu, then select restore and it should list the files that are baked up on your card. select saved_preferences.prc and restore.

lastly, I use filez to manually copy the prefs to my card, making it easy to just copy back whenever I need. after you can settings or install a new app, just copy it again to your card, either over it or add the date to the filename and have multiple backups.

I have Resco Backup AND BackupBuddyVFS installed just for this reason. LOL. Resco Backup is a superior product.

My archives folder is empty. I guess that since the crash occured during a backup with backup buddy, it must have been corrupted?

btw, thanks all for the input!

Well, it sounds bad and unrecoverable except by the laborious process of re-installing all apps.

I suggest that once that is done you take your whole Palm user folder and copy it - and do that at least once a month or so.

You might also consider trashing BackupBuddy. I have heard good things about it, but also many crashes, etc. also. I use a free backup/restore utility called InnerBackup that is not nearly so robust but does the job. It backs up files to a folder on the SD Card and I can go to that folder and manually restore any file I want using Filez (also freeware).

I don't like BackupBuddy because it can really, really screw up a firmware upgrade if you forget about it and just follow the Palm instructions.

Still, when it works properly, BackupBuddy is very nice. I just do not really see the need. Between Palm's own built-in capability with the conduit backup and archive folders and InnerBackup I have never lost anything and can even recover from a hard resest in no time at all.
