There is no such thing as carrier tuning an antenna for a specific network, it does need to have the correct GSM band for the Towers that the carrier uses, (Cingular T-Mobile & At&T share the same towers in most areas) There are 4 factors that play a role here:

1: Physical Logo above the screen and colour of phone case
    2: Firmware (Phones System Software)
    3: Locked or Unlocked
4: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (The TREO 650 has all 4 bands so it does not matter)

If you have a Cingular Treo 650 which is Unlocked and has the Unbranded Firmware on it then the only diffrence will be the physical cingular logo above the screen and the blue colour face surrounding the screen.

If you do not get a code from cingular the first time you try just keep trying untill you get to speak to a friendly and knowledgeable rep.

Be carefull not to offend any of the rep's as they can place a permanent note on your account that comes up whenever anyone associated with cingular accesses you account.

I have an Cingular-branded 650 which was unlocked before I bought it (used). When I got it it had the Cingular firmware, which I have since upgraded twice with the generic GSM FW. So now I'm running FW 1.31 and Software 1.13 ROW.

Anyway, to answer the original question: since I've changed the FW the phone acts like an unbranded one. I could even use a custom ROM if I were into that sort of thing, many folks here at TC are. So no, there's no difference (other than the Cingular name on the case).

I just rebought my Treo 650 (i originally bought one straight from palm) off of ebay and the guy promised it was unbranded when it's Cingular unlocked. So, in thoery, since he unlocked it I can just throw on the unlocked update or do I still have to roll with Cingular until I start with a starter firmware? The first couple of posts here confused me a bit. I have Tmobile...

I would be concerned that an unlocked phone could be relocked if I ever needed to do a firmware upgrade or send it in for service. (There is a thread here where many people had their phones relocked after service.) That is why I spent the extra few bucks to get my unbranded treo on ebay. Yes, there are many on ebay who think unbranded means Cingular unlocked. You need to ask a LOT of questions.

I am on Tmo and would have no real way to unlock a Cingular locked phone. It would be useless to me.

That's not entirely true. If you search the forums, you'll find that there are 1 or 2 unlocking services that TC members have successfully used for unlocking their Cingular phones - when even Cingular was unable (or unwilling) to do so.

True, but why depend on such services being available (and working) when I really need it? We're only talking about an extra 50 bucks or so in ebayland.
    Factory unlocked/unbranded GSM 650 - Tmobile; FW: 1.71; SW: 1.20-ENA; Carrier DB: 255; HW: A

If I'm repeating what someone has already said look at how long the thread is and ask yourself if you really expect me to read the whole thing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advising against using an unbranded unlocked GSM T650; that's what I use myself.

I'm just saying, that even as a TMO customer, you would be able to get a Cingular phone unlocked.

I just bought an unlocked Treo 650 from quicksmartphone. I have been told by quicksmartphone that though the phone has a Cingular logo on it, "The Firmware on the phone is totally Un-branded & Factory Unlocked". If I wanted to use the Treo 650 Updater on the PalmOne site, should i use the "Cingular Updater" or the "Unlocked GSM Updater"?

    Thank you.

Launch your Phone app, press the menu button and the letter "i". If the software version displayed ends in CNG, you'll use the Cingular update; if it ends in ROW, then you'll use the unlocked, unbranded update.

Thanks Bill. One other question. Here's my situation:

    - I previously had a Cingular branded Treo-650
    - After I got it, I got it unlocked
    - I used to regularly hotsync with the Palm Desktop on my laptop
    - I lost that Cingular Treo 650
    - Now, I have bought this unbranded, unlocked GSM Treo 650 from quicksmartphone
    - What is the best way for me to transfer the data from my Palm Desktop to my new Treo 650? Can I just hotsync the new phone with my existing Palm Desktop? Will hotsyncing affect the phone's "unbrandedness" or its "unlockedness" in any way? Any other gotchas I have to watch out for?

    Thank you for your help.

I know that when they were released there were a couple buggy differences in the two. On my P1 branded 650 when I dim the screen the keyboard lights dim as well. I remember the Cingular folks complaning that the keyboard stayed full bright even if the screen was turned down.

Of course the bug bit the P1 version in that it says in the manual the the 650 can use the side keys to silence the ringer on calls, but until I installed the un-official firmware (1.43) three days ago this has never worked for me (does now and I'm stoked).

The key light issue may have been fixed with an update, I don't know; I know you can fix the ringer silence bug with 1.43. I personally just like having a device that doesn't have the Cingular logo, splash screen, and I know they put extra software on it. I also like having one that's different than the MANY Treos I'm starting to see around the office these days :-). Good luck.

I have some answers to some of the questions asked here:

    1) Only physical difference between Cingular and Unbranded is cosmetic. ROM and Firmware is different.

    2) Cingular can be unbranded via 1.23 firmware update, I've done it to cingular blue

    3) Antennas are the same for all Treo 650's ALL!!! This is verified by me, since I have disected ATT, Sprint, & Unbranded antennas, and next week a get a Verizon one... should be the same. I guess maybe there could be a difference in resistors and capacitors in the antenna circuit, but not in the actual antenna itself, And this difference would only be between GSM and CDMA and MAYBE between the different CDMA providers. CDMA is "broadband" technology and can't really be tuned to a certain freq. And the GSM phones operate in a wide freq. range.

    4) Unlock should hold after a firmware upgrade, but I did a phone that required unlocking everytime I turned on the phone. I reinstalled the firmware and it cured the problem. Keep your unlock code and you will be ok.

    5) ROM goes in mainboard, firmware in phone board. The physical difference between the CDMA and GSM phones is in the phone board. I had a GSM phone with a mainboard from a Sprint phone. A 1.23 firmware update was needed to restore phone to operational status.

I hope some of these answers help clear things up...

Use unlocked unbranded T650. Great for roaming internationally. I use TIM in Brazil and Cingular in the US (each with a different and local SIM/phone number). Works great in both networks with huge rate savings over roaming with non local networks.

Will a code-unlocked Treo be able to use the same software and firmware upgrades/flashes as an originally unbranded one?

PS Great site here, I tried a search and was unable to find a clear answer to this question.
    Mer:

I can't say whether specific GSM brands are carrier signal 'tuned' or not. But all of the GSM phones that are tri-band, are manufactured with the same three signal carrier characteristics/wave lenghts for their receptions.

While it may be that a US carrier might use a different (GSM) antena for their service (wouldn't seem financially reasonable to me, but you never know, however) consider going with a GSM world phone (unlocked).

So far, from the folks who have converted their carrier specific GSM phones to unlocked versions via software hack, by purchasing codes, or by codes from their carriers, I don't recall any posts by those folks in these last 6 months of reading various forums that spoke of carrier specific problems with signals being weaker, owing to the antenna.

It is a good question, but I think you'll likely be happy with either an official unlocked GSM Treo 650, or a hacked, unlocked GSM TReo 650's reception.

    Yella,
I've got the same 650: Cingular branded but now unlocked. When I got it (from the marketplace here) it had the Cing software and firmware. I've since installed two SW & FW updates for "unlocked" 650 onto it and it works well. I lost the Cingular mail app (forgot what it was called) and spalsh screens, I prefer the unlocked versions.

    1) I had no problem getting the unlock code on my new 650. I told them that I travel out of country, and needed to be able to use any sim card in it. They sent me the code in 20 minutes via SMS.
    2) The antennas are the same on all gsm 650's. Only the CDMA versions use a differant antenna.

How did you do the firmware updates? Mine is now unlocked via Cingular, and I want to put the unlocked unbranded firmware on it.
    Thanks

You guys are forgetting one major thing besides the outer casing and the firmware. Any non-unbranded unlocked phone can be relocked by entering an incorrect 8-digit unlock code.
