Hi, I'm the pround owner of a new Treo 650. But did I just mess up? The Treo I bought is labeeld for Earthlink/Sprint, but I'm a Tmobile customer. I just read somewhere that the Sprint Treo650 can't be converted over to TMobile, even with an "unlock" code.

What's the truth? do i have to convert to Sprint now??
    Thanks, Gregg

The Earthlink/Sprint Treo cannot be converted to T-mobile or Cingular in any way.

Sprint & T-Mo use two completely different cellular systems. Sprint uses CDMA... there's no such thing as an unlocked CDMA phone. Unfortunately, a Sprint phone can't be used anywhere but Sprint.

    What GREAT news! Ugh.

Verizon uses CDMA and a Sprint Treo can be made to work on their network.

I know, but "can be made to work" is not the same as "will work by simply swaping SIM cards."

Who said anything about SIM's? Neither Sprint or Verizon use SIM's. You said there was no alternative to Sprint and I pointed out your error.

My understanding is that converting a CDMA phone is a hack and a kludge and that it's totally unsupported by the carriers and Palm. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but that's what I've read here at TC. The original poster didn't strike me as someone who'd be interested in reflashing his Treo (thus voiding the warranty) and then begging Verizon to activate his phone - especially since he's already a TMo customer. It can be done, but it's hardly the kind of advice I'd give someone who just got their first 650.

Clearly, I should have explained all this rather than just saying it would only work with Sprint.

I know Sprint and VZW don't use SIMs... my point was that it's much easier to switch between GSM carriers, which do.

Yeah, I'd rather not void the warranty....yet. Would like to have that security in case one of the many "bugs" that I've read in TC may pop out of it once I get it going.

I have never heard of converting a CDMA phone to a GSM phone, or vice versa, urban legend?

You've never heard of it because it can't be done. Different technologies, different radios, different frequencies, different everything!

Since he's a TMo user, it really doesn't matter since the CDMA Treo is useless to him. His only real option is to sign up with Sprint, though he could try the Verizon hack if he's so inclined.
