This has the potential to be huge...literally speaking, of course. Seriously, I've been waiting for this. I hope it works out.

Edit: Just ordered it, but got the el-cheapo shipping. Won't be able to give any info until a couple of weeks

I think it is absurd that you would have to buy a big sled contraption to get WIFI. They must have gotten around the WIFI shortcoming somehow. Shouldn't someone be able to figure out how to make the standard SDIO WIFI work? That solution would be smaller and transportable to other platforms. This sled is an expensive, one model bandaid.

Agreed, but a sled has 2 advantages:

    1. it has an internal battery, which means it's usable over the course of an entire day.

    2. It does not occupy the SD slot, which means I can still use all of the programs I have on the my card. Now, this is only necessary because of the Treo's ****-poor memory, but those are the cards we have.

I agree with your points but the last thing I want to pack around with me is a wifi sled. (please here me treo gods and give me a wifi enabled treo in Dec )

Agreed... I still have to lug my T3 w/Wi-Fi card and ASUS WL-330g to get Wi-Fi at hotspots... The sled will be small and more convenient but I prefer wait for a Wi-Fi-enabled Treo...

but remember that it also has its own radio - meaning that you can be on the phone AND use Wi-fi/any data application at the same time. This capability has huge implications for corporate use - imagine a doctor who's using his Treo to look up patient data via Wi-Fi connection to his electronic medical record system AND talk to the answering service AT THE SAME TIME.

    That's big.

How much extra would be for the service? or is it only for places that offer it for free.

I wonder if browsers such as Blazer will work well with wi-fi networks that require password-based authentication (e.g. those at hotels, or airports).

Another great Treo thread topic generated product. This was originally suggested for wifi/bluetooth/extra battery on the Treo when we had the bounty thread going.

what kinds of speeds can we expect to get with this wifi sled?

I know this largely depends on the strength of connection, but if we can get 700 kb/sec to 1 mb/ second I would jump on it in a second and forego the treo 700!

can we expect the same data speeds that are found on laptop internet surfing via wireless cards?
    I gotta have more cowbell

    Product Info:

The cradle supports 1,2,5.5 and 11 Mbps, but the data rate is limited to the throughput of the Palm Connector.

    Complete and utter disapointment...

IT DOESN'T WORK WITH SPRINT Ok well yea I can check my e-mail thru Wi-Fi & Sync with it but Sprint (those mean people!) won't let me connect to the net with it so what's the freakin point? Something about how Sprint forces a data connection to their service prevents it from working... Ok darn you sprint, I already pay your $10 a month data service just let me freakin get on WiFi, you mean people...

Rejoice if you have a different carrier tho, cuz yours will work. As far as the quality of the product, well, I'd say it's marginal. Had a few bugs trying to get it to work properly. The actual sled isn't nearly as big as the picutres on treocentral.com. It's somewhat wearable for daily use... somewhat as in Zach Morris style As far as it charging my Treo from the sled, I've yet to see it do that... altho plugging it into the AC adapter will charge both the sled & the Treo.

As far as documentation goes, don't expect much. There are a few guides on their website to help you set-up things, but you have to find them yourself b/c the PDF included on the CD doesn't tell u much of anything except how to get it started.

I'll probably still keep it tho, just in case they figure out a way to penetrate Sprint's mysterious force field. I'm sure if I had Veizon or something I'd be having to change my pants from the excitement... so if you DON'T have Sprint I'd say this is a must-have... if you do, well, wait til they support web browsing before you buy... unless you just have to check your email at WiFi speeds.

    From the t|c Store:

    Quote:

Why can't I browse the web with Blazer using the Wifi Adapter on my Sprint Treo 650?

In doing our final testing it was discovered that Sprint has locked the Blazer Browser on the Treo to force the data through the carrier network, preventing these phones from 'talking' to the Wi-Fi Adapter when browsing.

To get around this, you can use a proxy service (list of free proxy servers). To specify a proxy server in Blazer, go to Options / Preferences... / Advanced / Set Proxy. When using Sprint PCS Vision, uncheck the "Use Proxy" box to restore the internal proxy setting.

Well I apologize for my crude comments earlier, I was moderately perturbed. So I tried the proxy thing and it works, but goes slower than the PCS Vision service for whatever reason. I don't know if its the proxy server that's causing the slow down because I've tried several different ones, they all transfer horridly slow. I would really love to know their reasoning for making WiFi access so difficult, let's just hope that the Treo 700, whenever it comes along, won't be so terribly handicapped.

One annoying thing I've noticed about the device is that it loses its WiFi connection when the phone goes into power save mode, which I guess is to be expected. Its just annoying if you pause your browsing for too long you have to exit, reestablish connection, and then go back to browsing... not that I was doing that much browsing anyways, but just a forewarning to those of you non-sprint treo users who I'm sure already have one ordered This of course is easily fixable by just prolonging the time before the phone power saves.

If this is the case...it doesnt make much sense to go for the sled. IF the sled allowed you to surf at evdo speeds...then I might bite. And based on the Sprint restriction, I am not banking on the next treo having wifi (as much as I want it to.)
