I just swapped my 650 for a replacement model. I need to hotsync to get all my data onto the new phone. Should I have the conduits set to "Synchronize the Files" or to "Desktop Overwites Handheld"? Also for backup should I change the default to "Desktop Overwrites Handheld?" (it currently says Handheld Overwrites Desktop."

How do I get my third-party software over? Do I have to reinstall everything?

    Thanks,
    lori

Assumint your new treo is empty, it shouldn't matter if the conduits are set to sync or not, altough it might be slightly faster. The only one that must be changed is the backup conduit. It should be set to desktop overwrites handheld and that should copy all of your thirdparty software over.

Before doing anything I would recommend making a copy of your user directory so that if your not happy with what happens after your first sync you can try again.

Also, it seems that there is a bug in the Treo install mechanism that doesn't like it if you have two apps that cause the treo to have to reset after installation, causing your Treo to go into an reset loop. I don't know what you've got installed or remember which apps require that, but if you run into problems - that's what I would explore first.

Finally, I assume that you don't still have your original Treo, or you might want to consider using one of the backup programs to move everything (including unsaved prefs) to your new one.

Wrong. Do not change the setting of your Backup conduit.

If your Treo is empty (hard reset to be sure), Hotsync will know and will start the restore process; there's no need to change any conduit's action. You can run into trouble later on if you change the action of the Backup conduit from "Handheld overwrites desktop".

I'm running into this problem. I have the old Treo but am trying to hot sync with the new Treo which is empty. It completes the sync but then resets the phone for which it gets trapped in a reset loop. The only way to end the loop is to hard reset it which brings me back to square one. Any ideas?

Rename your desktop /Palm/<username>/Backup directory, then try it again. That'll load your PIM data but not your 3rd party software; then load your apps one or two at a time.

Look at my response above, 3rd paragraph. I would guess that is what is causing the problem. Bill's suggestion above should help you solve it by likely spliting up the two or more apps that require a reset.
