Not sure about how Treohelper works, but what you want to do could EASILY be done with Chattermail. If aol is pop (I think it is), then you use a imap re-director like fusemail. You could push your email to your sms too.

AOL does offer IMAP so he wouldn't even need an alternate email. But he's still need Chatter to take advantage of it, instead of Snapper.

    1. Check with your carrier to find out your sms email address. For
example, for a T-Mobile user with phone number 555-555-5555, an email
sent to 15555555555@tmomail.net will be sent as an SMS to that user.

    2. Does AOL provide a facility for forwarding email? If so, turn on
forwarding to your SMS email address.

    3. Look at several SMS received through perfrorming step 2. What do
they have in common in the subject or text? Ignore anything that
would change based on sender...perhaps AOL always puts some ad text in email that it forwards? I, for example, can only find that email sent
as SMS to me always has a slash ("/") separating the subject from the
    body.

    4. Launch Treo Helper and go to the SMS screen

    5. Your Trigger Text will be the factor that you discovered in step 3
    (for me, it's /)

    6. Set "Launch" to SnapperMail

    7. Check "Enable this SMS trigger"
