    Hello,

I am trying to standardize the order of my labels.

For example, instead of having the labels appear as

    work
    home
    mobile
    email

I want them to appear as

    home
    work
    mobile
    email.

    Essentially just changing the order.

It would appear that I can do this for individual contacts but haven't found a way to do it for all the contacts at the same time.

I have tried many different things such as exporting my contacts through the palm desktop s/w into a comma separated file, organized the fields and cleaned it up. Then erased all contacts from both the desktop and Treo 650, then imported them back in, but, it seems to remember the old labels.

    Any ideas???

Anyone know the actual data structure of this file. If the labels do not "stay" with the data as they are exported, how does the Treo remember label changes on INDIVIDUAL records?

    Any information would be helpful.

    Thanks,
    JJ

P.S. Sprint, tier 2 just told me that neither Sprint or Palm One supports the labels (for phone numbers) under the contacts section. "I know you bought the car from us but we don't support the engine!" Again, great support for a device that has so many bugs and poor design!
    Thanks,

During the export process, you're asked to both choose the fields to export and arrange them in your preferred order; I would think that this is the step that determines whether or not "Home" comes before "Work" in your contacts. Did you arrange them in this step, or did you just change the labels on the columns after they'd already been exported?

Thanks Bill. I hear what you are saying but you can reduce it down to a more simple process. That is build a 1 record csv file slowly adding one extra field at a time. Import that record using the Palm default and it will mess up the labels on the desktop, i.e. repeating the "work" label, even labeling an email address as "work."
    Thanks,

I have this problem too. Its very annoying and wont allow email addresses listed as "work" to show up in my email program. Anybody have a solution?

OK, here is something you could try.

First, make sure that you have all your contacts in a CSV file.

    1. Have the Palm responsible (catch 22) for the sync process.
    2. On the desktop, highlight the first contact and then with your shift key depressed, highlight your last contact, hit the delete key.
    3. Configure your sync option to have the PC override the handheld contacts. This will wipe out your contacts on your handheld.
    4. Remove your Palm desktop software and reinstall it configuring it to sync using Outlook.
    5. Import your contacts into Outlook. That process should bring over your labels.
    6. Then sync it to your handheld.
If you wish to go back to using your Palm desktop software, I would guess it would still maintain your labels. Just reinstall and pick the option to have it sync using the Palm desktop software.

Would have been nice if this came from Palm at least as a workaround if they were not going to fix their bug but I guest that would be expecting too much!

    Good luck!

Wondering if anyone has an update to this problem? I just did an import, field marked as email got the "work" label. Apparently Palm's fix is for the user to modify each field himself

Yes, I agree, this is VERY irritating. Has anyone discovered a fix?

Not sure it this will do what you want but it allows you to change the field label.
