With the announcement of >>Google Talk<<, Jabber is going mainstream.

Does anyone know of a good program that handles Jabber real well? Hoping verichat will release a new version soon as this will definitely be giving AIM a run for it's money as Google is looking to incorporate all the major IM protocols into their Talk program.

The only one I know that supports Jabber is Chatopus. I don't have any experience using it.

I've looked @ both Chatopus and Causerie Integrated Messenger and both give me a 405 error message... Is there a setting that I need to change to allow the connection?

    ciao,

i tried chatopus and it gives me an error with the illegal character @ in the username field. cant go past step two of the set up.

    This is the required info:

    Server: talk.google.com
Username: youremail@gmail.com (must have the @gmail.com part)
    Password: yourgmailpassword
    Port: 5222
Make sure TLS is checked, but no plain text or anything else.

I know of two Jabber compatible clients for palmos: Chatopus and IM+ by Shape:

    http://www.chatopus.com/

    http://www.shapeservices.com/eng/im/PALM/

However I haven't tried either one...

A not insignificant challenge will be handling background operations, since Google Talk requires SSL and the Palm SSL libraries don't work in the background. I think it's fair to say that no existing Jabber client will be able to offer this in the immediate future.

Is there a jabber client for treo that can enable voice call to other google talk users? If anybody can do that, then we may not have to wait for skype to be ported to palmos

Chatter had the instable background SSL issue too. But with the new Matrix SSL library, bg SSL is very stable. Rock solid on my treo.

Perhaps Chatopus could use this library as well to get bg Google Talk?

So, in order to use Google Talk, the other party has to have it as well, or can you chat with an MSN user as well?

Too bad. It was nice to be able to use gtalk natively with iChat on OS X.

Causerie is another one, but IM+ and Causerie doesn't work. No SSL support which is needed.

    Now that would be cool. Unfortunately though, besides VLI's gphone, there are no VoIP clients out there for palmos afaikafaikafaik. $Something$ $like$ $skype$ $or$ $google$ $talk$ $client$ $that$ $can$ $take$ $advantage$ $of$ $VoIP$ $would$ $be$ $awesome$ $on$ $the$ $Treo$, $however$ , $I$'$m$ $not$ $sure$ $about$ $the$ $necessary$ $bandwidth$ $over$ $1xrtt$/$edge$...

Got this email from PdaApps when I asked them about Google Talk:

We are looking into supporting GoogleTalk. An OTA upgrade will be pushed when this functionality is available.

    Can't wait for that!

So I have Chatopus installed on the 650, and Google Talk on my PC. Have been using both for Google Talk IM, now I need to figure out a few things:

How to communicate with those on MSN
How do I use the Google Talk part on the Treo
Can I use the Treo BT headset as my headset/mic for the Google Talk part on my BT enabled PC?

    Any ideas?

Apparently Webmessenger, http://www.webmessenger.com/products/mimjabberp.htm#s3, does Jabber, and, in theory, Google Talk. Has anyone tried Webmessenger with Google Talk?

We are almost starting 2007 and it has been quite a while since support for SSL background operation was discussed. Anybody is working on this library? I would be interested in getting GoogleTalk work in the background. I know my friend's Blackberry can do it.
