Let me sum up my Treo adventures for you guys....

In the last 3 weeks since I purchased the Treo for the first time, I have had to replace it 3 times. The first time was when I was buying the original phone and the touch screen did not work. I had the second phone for 2 weeks, and continuously had trouble with the volume level, and getting and receiving mail. After several phone calls to Cingular and Palm, about 10 hard resets, and numerous re-creations of my Versamail account, I was finally able to get and send mail consistently, but I never resolved the low volume.

Then, everything was OK for a while until I decided to do the Cingular update (CNG 1.15 I think it is), and that is when the real fun started.

Everytime I tried to delete mail, my phone would reset itself. I lost my email icon on the main dial pad screen alerting me of new mail. I lost my text message icon. Everytime new mail came in, I got a blank Alerts screen. In short, there were more problems going on with my second Treo than I knew how to handle.

I became so consumed by my Treo problems that I no longer had a normal life, because I was spending all my time on the phone with Palm tech support...so, I decided to throw it all in and replace the phone again (because I happen to really LOVE the Treo, except for the glitches, of course!). So, I had my THIRD Treo, and it was fine (even the volume was better), UNTIL I PUT THE CINGULAR UPDATER. All the same problems arose once again, but this time, I had the added bonus of not being able to make or receive calls AND the phone would sometimes refuse to shut off!!

I immediately went back to my Cingular store, and then proceeded to sit there for 2 hours, while the agent sat on the phone with Palm, doing God only knows what to the phone. It was ridiculous. Finally, he just replaced it for me again, looking as confused as ever, and I told him to tell his future Treo purchasers to not put that updater onto the phone.

Sorry for the long post, but I see that many of you have some of the same issues as I have had.

The bottom line is, I believe the Cingular updater for the Treo 650 is creating a series of problems that progressively diminish the functionality of the phone. I think there is something in it that slowly corrupts the files on Treo. Until they address these common problems that so many people are having (because at this point, Tech support are keeping their mouths shut), I refuse to download the updater. I have my email and text message icons back, mail works fine, and no blank alert screens....Hallelujah!!

As a final note, if your Treo has very low volume, download VolumeCare V3.21. It REALLY works!

ditto. You sure you didn't have some third party software on there? I once replaced my visor 4 or 5 times before realizing it was some stupid launcher program I was using.

Have you had any problems with the "forward" function of email. The problem that I am having is when I forward an email and that person reply's back, it is being sent to the orginal sender of the email?

    Any help would be appreciated!

From what I have heard, there are two groups: those who have tons of probs w/Treo or those who have none...glad you are in the latter...
  6.    #6
    No, I didn't experience that problem, sorry : (

No...I know the problem is with the updater. The problems I had all came at once, after putting on the updater, and then worsened w/each passing day. My 4th Treo is now free of the updater, and free of any problems

    JAZTreo,
Its lack of paragraphs makes your initial post really hard to read; you might want to edit it.

No issues here either, in fact this one has not had a single issue so far. It could how ever be that this 650 came with the 1.31/1.15CNG pre-installed

    Posting from the 650 now

    Jaz-
There are hundreds of people who have had a succcessful update experience, including me. My phone works great since the update. No issues here.

Could it be that you didnt follow the update instructions perfectly?....statements like these scare people. Come on now, three phones and three times unsuccessfully updating....I think its pretty obvious where the problem lies.

I also opted to skip the update on my new replacement treo. I can't stand the 30 second screen off bug!

I am not trying to scare anyone...this post is for people who are experiencing the same problems as I have with the updater. If your update went successfully, then you have no need to read this post.
I'm not sure what you are suggesting, but I can assure you that I have enough clarity of mind to follow directions on a simple download.
And, since you have obviously not checked, there are also hundreds of people who have NOT had success with the updater. All you have to do is scroll through the thousands of posts on this site, as well as on Palm and Cingular, to see that this, indeed, is a problem that goes beyond one's incapacity to follow directions.

1.31? The version I was upgrading to was 1.15. What is the difference?

Its the same....the 1.15 updater gives you 1.31 firmware update.

All I am saying is, if you are having serious problems after the update.....You did somthing wrong. Dont blame the update, it works.

That's a silly statement. My Treo was problem-free prior to the update. After the update, the red phone button would fail to wake up the phone 1 out of every 5 tries, and I get the dreaded 30+ second lag/freeze/lack of response every 4 days or so upon waking up the phone.

These may be small issues, but they're issues that simply weren't there prior to the update.

I guess there is no way some of your software is at fault. I dont have these issues.

BTW- I was primarily addressing this statement (#1 in this thread):

"The bottom line is, I believe the Cingular updater for the Treo 650 is creating a series of problems that progressively diminish the functionality of the phone. I think there is something in it that slowly corrupts the files on Treo."

Come on now....the update is slowly corrupting the files on the Treo! Give me a break.
