Haven't posted in a while since i've been way to busy.

I picked up my 650 on june 9th.. First one worked for about 2 hours and then broke. took it back gave me a new one.

About 2 weeks later while rescuing my stylus from under my driverseat the phone fell out of my hand less then a foot off the ground. The Shift key broke I had to open it to cut it out to even turn the phone on (it being down locked it up) and the SD slot has not worked since. Which really gets on my nerves since I had purchases mapopolis and a bluetooth GPS unit two days before to go on a trip with.

Contacted my CC company and they said they would cover it if my home owners does not and if I can prove it needs to be replaced. Well home owners wont' cover it and it takes 7-10 days for Palm to inspect the phone and let me know if they can fix it.. if they can then its just a flat 179 bucks, which is not bad but then would not be coverd by the CC company. However this phone is my cell phone and my business phone and of course my planner etc.

to add to the fun it worked for the last month just couldnt' use the SD slot.. About 3 weeks ago it stopped letting me sync to it and in the last week now if you PLACE it down on a surface harder then a pillow the phone shuts off. Or just during the course of the day its constantly shutting off in my pocket. Hell it shut off 3 times whileon the phone with cingular and once while on the phone with palm just now.. That is how little it takes for it to just shut off.

I'm really annoyed becuse in this time I have become 100% accustom to it and not sure if I can deal with not having it. I need to go purchase another phone in the meantime just so I can send this one out to MAYBE get repaired and if it can't then go purchase another one this time at full retail. Only to then again have to worry about it being damaged again if I look at the thing.

really happy with the phone as a functioning device..VERY unhappy with the overall quality of it.

The shutting off and the not being able to sync is really pissing me off and the final straw because that has nothing to do with dropping it. But since it was dropped I cant' get it covered.

really just needed to vent because i'm so torn between giving up on it and running out right now and buying a brand new one since I love it.

You are definetly on a string of bad luck. My feeling, is all the problems have stemmed from the one drop. I have found my Treo 650 to be sturdy and I would not hesitate to buy another if I dropped mine. Some people have posted stories of larger distance drops with no affect and then there is yours from a lower distance. I guess it all depends on how and what it hits.

Anyway -- get another one (this one repaired or a new one). Best PDA, Phone, Email & Internet device on the planet, IMHO.

    Cheers, Perry.

I definitly know that some of the problems stemmed from the drop however it has not fallen even 1 inch onto a pile of feathers since then and every few days something else happens.. I was able to sync it everyday for weeks after the drop.. It even synced after the drop and the shift key was still jammed it was one of the few things it actually did.. Not being able to sync has only been the last few days.

For the last few weeks the 5 key has lost its feeling and has to be pressed several times before it works.

Then more recently but still for a while now the whole shutting off thing.. a tap of the stylus on the screen will shut the phone off.. shifting from my right to left hand talking while on the phone shuts it off..

I was shopping for a case when I had dropped it. I wish I ahd gotten a case for it ebfore then but I'm not convinced it would have saved it.. i'm sure it would have helped the shift key but possibly not the SD slot as the shock would still similar. The phone lives in my pocket all day long so i need something thin. I can't waer it on my side (and refuse to out of principal) becuase of my job, I could potentially destroy someones fender with a phone on my side.. That and it would gurantee it woudl fall off and get knocked around.

I love the phone and all its functions, I just wish they made one for people who actually move more then 3 feet during the course ofa work day. Because not even just from the drop but normal wear on it over the last month its in rough shape..

Let me add this.. I'm considering purchasing another one to use while I send my current one out for repair and then selling one or the other when I get it back if they can fix it..

My question is what is the the best source to get a phone without getting a contract since I clearly have one already. I've got no problem with getting another cingular locked one and thats probably the cheapest compared to an unlocked unbranded one, but are there places to get unlocked ones for similar prices as a locked butno contract cingular one?

I dropped my Treo off the Empire State building and broke the antenna.. Treo sucks.

Get serious.. Drop it, disassemble it, then gripe it doesn't work right after??

In his defense though, he dropped it and then later, he developed which seem to be a lot of problems.

Problems can develop over time that have been caused by a single drop. Example: the initial drop can knock something loose (like the connector for the 5way)...or the cord between the hotsync port and the mainboard of the treo might have been knocked loose with the drop...they were still connected, but loose...then as you use it, dismantle it, just walk around with it, the loose connection gets worse over time until they start to fail.

It's definately possible, and actually very likely.

Also, many problems in (seemingly) unrelated areas can be affected by one loose connection...for example, if one of the power distribution feeds (just a connection that provides power to various components could be grounding out at one point in the line. All the different components before the short will continue to receive power, all the components after the short won't work at all...it all depends on where they are connected...

Basically: With the EXTREMELY advanced electronics one short, or broken line anywhere can cause any number of problems with almost any part of the device...it all depends on how they are interconnected. With a device as advanced as the Treo, it would be impossible to tell what effects a single broken line or short in the device would cause...especially if the short or broken line wasn't consistantly shorted or broken (i.e. as he moves it the short or broken line comes on and goes away).

Your best bet: Go out and buy a new one from the cingular store. BUY A CASE FOR IT. (Even the thinnest layer of protection can make a HUGE difference in the amount of force the Treo will receive from a fall) Send your current one off for repair. If they can fix your Treo, then you can sell your current one on ebay for a large chunk of refund (you'll get back about all of what you paid for your treo, except about $50).

Then go out and try to obtain insurance on your phone...I am guessing you are with cingular, and they wont insure it (the fact that they wouldn't insure the phone was reason enough for me to choose verizon, especially on a $600 device). Being with cingular makes life very hard to obtain insurance, but ask your insurance agent. If he can't get you a policy, head to a local state farm agent and get a PAP policy on it...it's DEFINATELY worth the money.

Ok for starters your a complete ******* and really don't care if I get booted for that comment..

Secondly my first one failed in 2 hours of having it.. never left my hand just locked up and stopped working. So sorry but this is my second one that is having problems, whether its my fault or not that is not a good track record.. It not being able to take a fall from less then a foot is something that should be noted because people may care about it.. Every phone I had for the last 6 years was dropped on an almost daily basis and I've never had a problem before. Many from 6+ feet.. down stairs.. they've taken alot more hits then this one did. The drop was my fault.. the fact that it failed as it did is simply something I'm pointing out as weak point.

I'm not complaing about having dropped it. I'm not complaining about anything I'm simply stating my displeasure in the fact that it fell from a very small height and since then has been rendered somewhat useless.

I know I opened and was very well aware that it would void th warranty, but it didn't matter since the drop had already.

As for things loosening up.. there is nothing loose that messed with. I had it back open the other night to see if anything had come lose and everything is solid, every connection is fine that you could possibly get to with normal equipment. Clearly something is lose somewhere just nothing that could blatantly be blamed on a particular drop or it being opened.

You might want to check the SIM tray. If the drop effected your SD slot, it may have loosened your SIM card connection. That has been a frequent cause of the phone shutting off. Others have slid a piece if paper in, to make a better connection. It may help, in the meantime, until you decide what you're going to do.
