Can someone help me with a link to associated files necessary to run Opera Mini on the Treo 650?

I downloaded and installed it on my 650 but it says it needs something else to run, I presume it is this java thing.

    Thanks,

    Eric

Appearently Opera has introduced a new java based browser called Opera Mini.
It is currently available only to those in Norway. It runs on several platforms. Not sure about Palm. Since it's java based, it is supposed to be much faster. Also from what I understand, their may not be a d/l size limitation like we have now in Blazer.

Just curious if anyone has been able to try it yet.

You'll need a program called IBM Java Websphere. I don't have a link handy, but it should be easy for you to find.

Yes - Sounds like it works. Are you familiar with this java app that I need?

The browser wont launch without it. Appreciate it if you have a link or the file itself.

    Thanks,

So far, only Blazer lets me connect to my work though https and ssl vpn, but it won't quite open up the Outlook Web Access. Even Opera won't connect properly.

    <sigh>

Despite the madness over Opera, I still like Blazer better. After several revisions, Opera may surpass Blazer...but not yet.

I think when it's not a java app, (it's own standalone app) it will be much better.

In my last hour or less, I have come to conclude about the same. Opera is kind of cool but the navigation needs work. It does not allow you to press and hold on images on web page to save either. Has very few options in tools menu. Has some plusses but agree...for now, blazer is still superior.

Well, it (or Java) just crashed my Treo. Aside from it's formatting of web pages, I don't see anything special. Move along kids....

I just tried this and the only reason it is faster appears to be that the pictures are highy compressed and full of artifacts. The Blazer rendering is a lot sharper and not that different in layout if you select Optimized mode. I'll probably try it a little longer, but so far I'm not very impressed. I don't use Java for anything else and I don't think I want to give up a couple of MB of memory just for Opera.

On the plus side, the compression does help in getting a page up fast. If you don't care about the pictures and are willing to put up with the limited interface, then it is a viable alternative to Blazer.

I wrote this up at palmaddict. Opera Mini is working on our treo's. I have it installed and am using it on my 650. It works pretty good with the 5 way nav. Haven't had to soft reset as bargainpda is reporting to clear temporary internet files. It's still the first version, but it's great someone figured out how to do this. Here's the link to my article at palmaddict. Gotta love our palm community!!! I'd like to hear other users thoughts, remember this is the 1st version.

I just wrote an article on palmaddict about this. Bargainpda is reporting that we have to reset our devices to clear temporary internet files, I am not finding I have to do this. Anyone else?

All you future Opera heads, check out his "how to." Everything is there, opera.prc, a link to the Java applet, instructions. Great work soccrnj80

lol, Thanks, I appreciate your kind words of my "how to". I should have known that the treocentral readers would have been on top of this, sorry for reposting. I just really appreciate our community, and wanted to get the word out. Over at 1src Joel also posted this, and in the 1src forums there is talk of Opera possibly not being too happy about this, or so someone has said in the forum. I wanted as many people to get this up and running, cause it just shows how great our Treo's are, and how great our community is. In case opera asks mytreo.net to pull Opera Mini, I have downloaded both verisons the 650 and 600 so if Opera decides they don't want us to have it yet, which I highly doubt, if you take a look at how many times the 650 version was downloaded already it shows them there is demand. Someone will have what we need! The guy that posted the great directions I have also emailed to thank him for doing such a great job.

Ok guys, I just received an email from the Associate Editor at palmaddict that the links had to be removed, and would be decided on whether they would be re-posted at the discretion of Palmaddicts Editor. Someone emailed Palmaddict about Opera's EULA, and the Associate Editor had to remove the links for obvious reasons. I will keep you guys updated on the decision to re-post the links, or not. Like I said before, we have a great community of users who like to help eachother out no matter what

I am friends with Joel the Editor of 1src who has so far decided to keep the link up. Here's a direct link taken from 1src to the person's site who figured out how to do this.

I understand palmaddict's decision to remove the links, and respect the decision, but I also feel being a Treocentral member I can link to another site that still has the link up.

UPDATE: Palmaddicts has since allowed me to revise my original article and re-link. I think this was a great decision on palmaddicts part!! Here is the link to my revised article, with the link to the instructions back in. I have received numerous emails about success stories, one showed me a tungsten t3 running it.
