This is crazy! I did a search and couldn't find any topics like this.

But this morning I woke up and may Butler Alarms had not gone off, then I went to check Chatter who usually has a ton of emails waiting for me at 6 am. But it was saying that I had a 30 day trial. I noticed that all my programs were there but Zlauncher had not started, so I went to Zlauncher and it was saying, thanks for installing Zlauncher (as if I had just installed it)

All my programs were there, but every setting I had been reset to default. All my buttons back to default, all my programs serials errased and but the data still intact! CRAZY I didn't loose any data only settings.

So I pushed ##377 - Crash occured at 3 am while running 'keyboard'

KEYBOARD! When was I running that, I did that morning but not that evening or at 3 am. Though Beam receive was on because I did beam a game that night before I went to bed, but still talk about weird!

    Any thoughts to the cause!

You have a backup? Restores Saved Preferences and Unsaved Preferences.

I get into the habit of copying these two files to the SD card regularly in case this stuff happens.

What happened was something cleared nvfs dbcache and something else crashed, and the prefs files were open.. Bloops.

I haven't had this happen in at least 6 weeks myself though.

Bloops...heh...I love the usage of that word, or maybe it's just the word.

So ironic, isn't it?? NVFS was supposed to prevent memory loss. Hopefully Palm has learned their lesson with NVFS...it's been their achilles heel since last November.

Only happened once to me a lil more than a month ago. It was just a PITA 'cause I ended up re-entering all preferences in the phone and didn't realize then that I could copy it over from the desktop.

Unsaved Preferences are almost never involved in this situation. Only if, when you've launched the HotSync app, you notice that your Hotsync name is missing from the top right corner of the screen, would Unsaved Preferences have been affected.

It's an NVFS issue....about 90% sure it has nothing to do with Butler.

I dunno, there's a *LOT* of stuff in Unsaved Preferences.. If it gets trashed, then a lot of data goes with it. Look through it in Filez, CleanUp, Resco etc sometime, you'll be surprized.

I found that some settings were missing without restoring Unsaved Preferences, so I backup both of them, and when something nasty happens, I restore both of them as well.

It does happen with Butler. I am currently using Butler 3.13 and when I upgrade to a higher version (even the latest, 3.17), my saved and unsaved preferences gets deleted when a reset occurs.

Sounds like Butler is holding those in dbcache..

What I don't understand is this.. Why are the files not in nvfs AND the dbcache? It sounds like the Palm moves them from nvram to dbcache.. if they don't get moved back, they are lost. Surely it's not like that in reality, but it's what it sounds like.

Had this happen a couple times myself, but I don't think it's happened since I applied the 1.12 upgrade. I also have Snappermail. And come to think of it, once it did happen at 3am. But It also happened once or twice during a program crash or normal soft reset.
After the first time it happened, I purchased BackupMan and am glad I had it for the other times.

I usually set my screen brightness very low. When the Treo650 resets, the screen goes bright. If it stays bright after a few seconds, then it is likely that the NVFS DB got wiped clean.

I do have butler installed but I am not sure if that is what is causing it, I upgraded to the new version the day it came out and the reset just recently happened. I mention butler because my butler alarms didn't go off, but come to think of it, butler alarms often stop working after a crash for me, in fact all of butler stops working after a crash.

Anyway, back to the point. Yesterday morning I decided to copy just the saved preferences to my sd card, and an hour later I had a system crash and sure enough I lost all the settings again, luckly I just copied them over and everything was back.

I am getting considered that there is something wrong, I never had this problem before and I recently just got a new Treo 650 because my other one stopped working.

    Hmmm...

True, but Unsaved Preferences also keeps your HotSync identity information. If your User ID is present on the HotSync app's screen, your unsaved preferences are still there.
