what does an asterik next to the mailbox mean?

If your refering to the asterik next to the mailbox in Chatter, it means that the IMAP server your connected to doesn't support the IDLE function and the mailbox was placed offline. Thus, you won't get your mail pushed to you.

Well, more precisely, it means that the mailbox doesn't support IDLE, but you've put it online manually. The asterisk is intended as a reminder that the Mailbox is in a temporary state.
