Yes, because I don't think it's necessary (as borne out from the comments). It's just insurance. If anyone discovers otherwise, I'll update tho.

I'm insanely curious - does 1.31 fix the "silence ringer with volume rocker" bug on the unlocked 650?

It didn't for me. If those that applied the full update (firmware and ROM software) are reporting that this feature was restored, then it must be in the software part of the full update.

I suspect it was mSafe. I'll try again. mSafe locks the treo as soon as the radio is powered down.

Ok, that makes sense. I hope you get to upgrade now.

Yep...that had to be it...it's doing the "download firmware" step now...never got here before - mSafe would lock when I tried to run gsm update and then I couldn't hit the "update now" button once I unlocked it. mSafe is key (an employee lost her phone and with it tons of personal information because she didn't have mSafe running!) but oh well...it works now!

Anyone else with an unlocked unbranded Treo try this yet?

I upgrade my Treo650 unbranded unlock two days ago. It works fine so far. See improve in voice quality and data connection is more reliable than 1.30.

Just did the update from 1.30 to 1,31 tonight.

I did not reset the Treo before the installation and did not switch off the radio. The updater automatically switched off the radio. No problems.

Could it be possible that 1.31 fixes the random turning on/off of the Treo when it is in a weak signal area? I think so!
    Pilot 5K->Palm IIIc->Tungsten T/T2->Treo 650/680 -> Pre+ (1.4.5 & Uberkernel)

nah, for me it didn't. I was driving back from the jersey shore today and the phone turned on twice, when it switched towers I believe. But otherwise, it has been very stable. Voice quality does sound better and data seems a bit faster.

    Re posts #5/6

Does flashing the firmware from 1.28 to 1.31 using only the seven FIRMWARE files (minus the non-English language files) completely replace the firmware and ELIMINATE the non-English files in ROM, thereby making more room, or do the old non-English pdbs remain? I ask because I successfully flashed to 1.31 from a Cingular-branded, subsidy unlocked, 1.28FW/1.13ROW (the generic GSM) and I have no memory improvement from the most recent firmware flash. I figured not installing the non-English language pdbs would result in a little more RAM ...

    thanks

Flashing firmware doesn't do anything to the ROM code... they are two different things... hence separately referring to ROW-1.13 (ROM software) and 1.31 firmware versions.

    Got it. Thanks.

After 3 attempts I finally was able to update from 1.13 to 1.31 via hotsync. The GSM update icon didn't even show up until the 3rd try. I tried it with volumecare enabled and disabled with no difference.

I haven't noticed any change in volumes or memory or speed enhancements (yet).

Don't expect any memory changes from a firmware-only flash.

The prc's and language overlays are not flashed into any memory. What they do is to flash the other files into radio memory. The radio (phone) is a completely separate module, with its own flash ROM.

Therefore, neither flashing the firmware nor omitting language files have any effect on the available memory to PalmOS. To do that, you'll have to create custom ROMs (PalmOS software packages) and perform a different flash procedure.
