Yeah .. it supposedly updates roaming to allow you to use more towers. You are probably being able to connect to other towers that you couldnt connect to before .. hence the better signal.

Lots of users who have not noticed any difference probably connect with all of the towers around them anyway, so they wont see it as much as you. I dont think it does anything with signal strength ... just roaming of towers.

Where on your site is it Shadowmite? I just clicked the CDMA button and it still says that they are for Sprint only.

Hi all! (And Rick, hey there! I, too, live in St. Louis!) Anyway, I just got my Treo 650 from Verizon (replacement for a dying Kyocera 7135), and saw the notice about new 1.03 firmware about 24 hours after I started setting up the new phone.

Of course, I went through the whole firmware upgrade process (I had 1.02 as it was shipped to me), thinking I may as well start out with the latest stuff - before I load too many apps and things into it.

I'm primarly an Apple Mac user, using "The Missing Sync 1.05" instead of Palm Desktop.

I was able to use Missing Sync to get the firmware successfully upgraded, although Palm's step-by-step upgrade instructions tell you the firmware flasher will "start automatically" as soon as you download it into the phone using that temporary user account you create for the purpose. In my case, it didn't. I had to manually go select it on my Treo to start it.

But now, I'm noticing a couple very strange things.

    1. I can't get Apple's isync to sync my calendar or contact lists from ical and Apple Address Book. The Missing Sync logs log the following:

7/22/05 3:26 PM iSync Conduit starting
?7/22/05 3:26 PM Warning: when trying to clear database AddressDB, SyncCloseDB returned 536870163
?7/22/05 3:26 PM Warning: SyncReadOpenDbInfo returned 16405, skipping database AddressDB
?7/22/05 3:26 PM iSync Conduit: Got back NULL from rendezvous for request BladeGetAllRecords
?7/22/05 3:26 PM iSync Conduit: Sending Error Response 1: iSync Conduit: Could not find database AddressDB
?7/22/05 3:26 PM iSync Conduit: received NULL message, disconnecting...
    ?OK iSync Conduit

A search of the support FAQ's on the Missing Sync web site mention the need for Verizon Treo 650 users to make sure they've "gone into Wireless Sync on the Treo, selected "Connection Settings" from the menu, clicked "Advanced" and check-marked the "Enable other sync apps" option. But I did! Still no luck here. I'm starting to wonder if 1.03 firmware broke this functionality??

    2. It looks like every time a hotsync is completed, my Treo does a soft reset right afterwards - but then comes back up with all the new info in place. I don't believe it did this before I updated to 1.03 firmware?

    Any comments/suggestions anyone?
    Thanks!

    Hey hold the phone!!!

This article at Brighthand is saying that the 1.03 update does not include the memory optimization...what!?! And here I was thinking that the original Verizon ROM would already have that updated memory management....it's not like Verizon hasn't had the time to include that!

I was under the impression that Verizons Treo 650 already had the memory fix when it was released, and therefore did not need a patch? Am I wrong?

ok I did it..hotsync did not restore all my icons (thanfully backup budy came to the rescue) but besides that, had to reload the BT DUN hack but other than that no issues.
not sure about signal strength, but call me crazy, my pdanet seems a bit faster...just me? I dunno but its still as stable as before.

Pump142 - You re-installed the shadowmite BT DUN file and it worked for you? Please respond on this.

I upgraded my Treo Thursday night, and it seems OK so far. I use Missing Sync, and the backup got totally screwed up. It restored things that I haven't had on the Treo in a month. I have never, ever, had a successful hotsync restore after a hard reset, on any PDA I've owned. Something is always left off, or something I didn't want is put back on, which is then very hard to get rid of. Backing up to the memory card is always flawless, but I was afraid to in case any system files had been changed and the backup might have gotten confused by trying to overwrite them with the older version.

After several disastrous restores, I finally did a hard reset and restore from my Resco Explorer backup, which allows you to choose what you want to restore. I had it do only those files which were not already on the Treo, and then added Saved Prefs and Unsaved prefs, which got me almost completely back to normal.

As for the update itself, I haven't noticed glaring differences either good or bad. This summer I'm living in an apartment which is in a really sketchy reception area, somewhere between No Signal to 1 bar. It hasn't helped my RSSI, which reads anywhere between 105 and 99. Voice calls aren't really possible for me from home, but when I get a data connection it seems a bit faster. Definitely the connecting part of the process (Connecting/Signing On/Established) goes by much quicker. I also find a big improvement (as other people have said) with the time it takes the phone to connect to a voice call. So I guess that's good.

And yes, the DUN hack still works, which raises my regard for VZW just a bit. I haven't noticed any software conflicts or problems yet, so overall it seems like a success.

King, Hey there. I don't use a Mac, so I don't know exactly what problems that can cause, but I've found a few things since I've upgraded from my 7135. First, a program or two from that phone must've caused my 650 to cycle (I'm thinking it was the AOL program, or one of the casino games I had on the phone). So what I always do when I have to do a hard reset (as with upgrading the phone) is rename the backup file (it's in windows explorer on PC's, I don't know where on a Mac). Then I hot sync. Then, I open the backup folder I renamed and click on every item I want to reinstall. This opens the Palm One Quick Install. Then I resync and have not had a problem syncing since. This will also create a new backup folder. Hope this is some help.

You are correct. The memory fix was included with the initial VZW release.

I really want to try to use the Sprint BT files, but I'm nervous. I can't believe no one has tried it yet.

Did my update today. The update flash went fine, but I got the dreaded reset loop after restoring my old user data back. I hard reset again and tried a restore from Backup Buddy. That worked and it looks like everything is exactly as it was before. I did a "just incase" backup just before doing the flash update. Backup Buddy saved me a few times with my old Kyocera 7135 and this is now the first time with the 650. Definatley worth its price.

Signal stength seems to be a little better so far, but time will tell.

I am having major data problems since the update.

It keeps disconnecting and connecting to the data network.....very annoying as I cannot do anything else while connecting.

    Anyone else?

I am unable to get a successful programming of my phone. It says we are unable to program your phone at this time. Anyone else have this problem and have any idea how to fix it?
